Wieliczka Salt Mine

Kopalnia Soli w Wieliczce

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, famous throughout Poland and abroad, is located about 10 km from the center of Krakow, on the E 40 route. From Krakow, you can get here from the Main Railway Station by suburban train or minibus. The mine is one of the most famous tourist facilities in the world, attracting millions of tourists.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a labyrinth of underground pavements with a length of 300 km, which are a remnant of 700 years of operation in this area. As an extremely valuable monument of material culture, the Salt Mine was inscribed on theUNESCO World Heritage List in 1978, as one of the first objects.

Salt Mine Tour

Visiting the Salt Mine in Wieliczka takes about 2 hours (with the Salt Museum 3 hours), on several alternative routes, including the popular Tourist Route, the more extreme Mining Route or Solilandia for children. The most famous and beautiful fragment of the Wieliczka Mine is the huge chapel of St. Kinga, which contributed to the creation of the Mine. The beauty of the Chapel carved in salt is stunning!

In addition to the Chapel of St. Kinga, there are many other wonderful places to see in the mine. In addition, concerts, exhibitions and filming take place here. Remember about warmer clothing, the temperature in the Mine is about 15 degrees Celsius. Tickets are worth booking in advance, as numerous tourists wanting to visit this miracle of technology line up in long queues under the Mine.

Almost all underground routes start in the Daniłowicz Shaft, in the complex of buildings of the "Wieliczka" Salt Mine. On the other hand, the tour of the Mining Route and the Secrets of the Wieliczka Mine begins from the Regis Shaft located in the very center of Wieliczka, near the Saltworks Castle at Zamkowa Street.

If we visit both routes, we are entitled to a promotional ticket. In November 2014, the multimedia Chapel of St. John Paul II was made available in the Mine as part of the Cracow Saltworks Museum. Also in 2014, the Graduation Tower was opened next to the Mine.

Mass in the Mine

It is also worth recommending the Holy Mass in the Mine, which takes place in the Chapel of St. Kinga every Sunday and at 7.30 am. It's an interesting way to spend a longer, quiet moment in this wonderful place. Admission to Mass is free.
