Warta Mouth National Park. Check the routes of wetlands and birds

The "Ujście Warty" National Park is one of the newest national parks in Poland, it was created in 2001, but already in 1977 these areas, which are a valuable refuge of water and marsh birds in Poland and one of the most important wetlands in Europe, were protected by the International Ramsar Convention. The picturesque landscape of the Park is primarily meadow habitats, intersected by a dense network of canals and oxbow lakes, as well as willow thickets. The meandering Warta River flows through the middle of the Park - the third river in Poland in terms of length, dividing the Park into the northern part - the so-called Northern Polder and the southern part, located within the Kostrzyn Retention Reservoir.

Warta mouth - position
The Warta Mouth National Park was established, as the name suggests, near the mouth of the Warta River to the Oder, in the western part of Poland, near the border with Germany, near the town of Kostrzyn nad Odrą. It is the north-western border of the Lubuskie Voivodeship, which is entirely famous for its beautiful nature. We had the opportunity and pleasure to check it out in the summer, which is not the best time for this place, because the Warta Mouth National Park is best visited in the spring, when the birds are much more animated and stay here in a much larger accumulation, and the waters are much more and occupy summer meadows. Since this place delighted us with its beauty and tranquility in the summer, how beautiful it must be here in spring or autumn, when the birds give their performance.
Warta Mouth National Park - a valuable bird sanctuary

PN Ujście Warty is one of the most valuable areas in Poland in terms of ornithology. Wetlands, extensive meadows and pastures are an extremely important refuge for waterfowl and mudfowl. Once there were much more of these wetlands here, and the great delta of the Warta River was a huge natural wealth. Today it is still an Eldorado bird, there is no doubt about it. Suffice it to say that over 260 species of birds are observed in the area of the Warta Mouth National Park. This is more than half of all species observed in Poland! What is extremely valuable, breeding was found in over 170 species. More than 60 species of birds of "special care" live here, including: corncrake, white-fronted tern, watercress, crane, fart and white-tailed eagle. This means that the Park is an excellent place for them to live, and for people it is a great place for bird watching. Similarly convenient bird watching sites can be found in theBarycz Valley lying north of Wrocław, in the Biebrza backwaters near Goniądz, in the Biebrza National Park and in the Drawa backwaters in the Drawa National Park.

Routes and paths in PN Ujście Warty
There are marked hiking trails in the Park. In addition, there are many roads open to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. It is also worth taking advantage of nature trails prepared for tourists. We went to a few of them and it was an amazing experience, although the time for bird watching was poor and we had to imagine them a little, but we were delighted with this place, it is interesting and very quiet even in the summer months!
The "Bird Trail" nature trail, the length of the path is about 2 km, the walking time is 2-3 hours, unless bird watching draws us in, then the time may be much longer 🙂
Access: in Słońsk we reach the roundabout, and then follow the directions. We arrive at the so-called Betonka, where the beginning of the path is located. The path leads along a concrete road through the most attractive breeding areas of birds in the Park, which is why the best time to cross it is the breeding season, i.e. spring. On the route, there are 5 information boards, a shed with benches and an observation room. When going on the path, it is worth getting binoculars, a telescope, a bird atlas and a guide along the path.
