Szczawnica is a beautiful and popular resort located in the Pieniny Mountains, in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, on route No. 969, near Krościenko nad Dunajcem, about 40 km from Nowy Targ. Szczawnica is a well-known spa town, picturesquely located in the valley of the Grajcarek stream, near its mouth to the Dunajec River, where the end port of the Dunajec Gorge, famous throughout Poland, is located.

The healing nature of Szczawnica is determined by the mild and warm climate and the sources of healing mineral waters (including Szymon, Helena and Magdalena). In addition to the medical and sanatorium base, there is also a well-developed tourist infrastructure, and in winter also ski infrastructure. In recent years, Szczawnica has been nicely renovated and developed, so staying here becomes a real pleasure, although it is crowded on summer and winter weekends.

1. Rafting on the Dunajec River, Sromowce Wyżne

Famous throughout Poland rafting through the picturesque Dunajec Gorge is the most popular attraction of this city. The route from Sromowce to Szczawnica is 18 km, the rafting takes just over 2 hours, and takes place every day from the beginning of April to the end of October.

2. Sokolica in Pieniny

Sokolica with a height of 747 m above sea level is one of the most beautiful peaks in the Pieniny Mountains, administratively belonging to Krościenko nad Dunajcem, but it can also be reached by a trail leading from Szczawnica. The dominant peak of Sokolica rises to a height of about 300 m above the level of the Dunajec, with a picturesque winding breakthrough in this place.

3. Promenade in Szczawnica

Szczawnica Promenade (Nad Grajcarkiem Street, Zawodzie Street) is a beautifully revitalized promenade with a length of about 1800 m, stretching along Grajcarka Street, there are benches, pergolas, there is somewhere to eat, you can see the line to Palenica from here

4. Pieniny Road in Szczawnica

The Pieniny Road is a picturesque and very popular route leading through the Pieniny Gorge, along the Dunajec River, from Szczawnica to the Red Monastery and Sromowce Wyżne. The Pieniny Road is about 10 km long and is closed to car traffic. There is a red trail from Szczawnica to the Red Monastery (2.5 hours one way), from which other hiking and cycling trails depart.

5. Upper Park in Szczawnica

At Zdrojowa Street, there is a historic park with beautifully renovated monuments, Dietla Square with a Water Pump, original sculptures and a concert shell

6. Kayaking and Rafting in Szczawnica

The route of traditional rafting can be covered in a more active way, e.g. by a pontoon (rafting) or a kayak. It's a great entertainment that delivers a high dose of adrenaline, on safe equipment.

7. Palenica in Szczawnica and chairlift

Palenica (722 m above sea level) is a popular peak in the Małe Pieniny Mountains. At its top is the "Groń" shelter. The Palenica can be reached by a chairlift of the Polish Cable Car. In winter, there are: a snowy downhill route on the slope of Palenica with a length of 1000 m, with FIS homolagation, an illuminated route on the slope of Szafranówka with a length of 1800 m, 2 ski lifts on Szafranówka with a snowy easy route, Halfpipe - a snow gutter for snowboarding with a ski lift on the top of Palenica

8. Homole Gorge in Pieniny

A picturesque gorge located in Jaworki near Szczawnica, built of limestone rocks, located in the Małe Pieniny Mountains. His sculpture is varied, and the Kamionka stream flows through the bottom. Homole Gorge is considered one of the most beautiful gorges in Poland. A nature reserve has been created here. The green trail from Jaworek runs through the gorge, leading further to Wysokie (1050 m above sea level) - the highest peak of the Pieniny Mountains.

11. Buildings of the Health Resort 

Historic resort buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries with emblems painted by Józef Szalay (the creator of the spa in Szczawnica). It is worth taking a stroll along Zdrojowa Street and experiencing this atmosphere from the turn of the century. Unique in this respect is the Upper Park with its beautiful Guest House and unique Dietla Square.

Access to Szczawnica

It is easiest to get to Szczawnica by your own car, although this does not mean that it will be quick. From Krakow (120km) it will take more than 2 hours, but half of the route is Zakopianka, which, as we know, can be crowded. In fact, you have to take this route from all major cities in Poland. There is no paid parking zone in Szczawnica, but the car parks are mostly paid (prices vary from approx. PLN 4-5 per hour). There are very few free car parks, e.g. at Skotnicka Street or Główna Street by the cemetery.

There is no railway to Szczawnica, so you will not get here by train. Buses or buses from Kraków, Nowy Targ or Nowy Sącz remain.
