Spiš Castle - the largest castle in Slovakia - a UNESCO hit

Spiš Castle is the largest castle in Slovakia and one of the largest fortresses in Central Europe. This stone giant from the 12th century is located an hour's drive from the Tatra Mountains, next to the town of Spišské Podgród. As an impressive ruin, it towers over the surrounding area and impresses from afar. It makes a thunderous impression as you approach it. Spišský hrad also charmed others because it was inscribed on the UNESCO List. Currently, it is open to tourists who like to come here. After all, it is probably the most photographed castle in Slovakia.

The largest castle in Slovakia and one of the largest in Central Europe

The extensive castle complex covers an area of over 4 hectares, making it one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. Located on a limestone hill, at an altitude of about 634 m above sea level, it is an excellent vantage point for the entire Spis Basin. The access to the castle itself provides impressions – the silhouette of the ruins suddenly appears on the horizon and every moment this colossus makes a greater impression. Location, access and parking

Spiš Castle is located in the eastern part of Slovakia, near the town of Spišské Podhradie. The easiest way to get here is by car from Poprad or the High Tatras via the E50 road. It takes about an hour to drive. The roads are of good quality and the signage leading to the castle is legible. There is a car park at the foot of the hill. In May, it was free and I think it is free all year round. It fills up quickly in high season, so it's better to arrive in the morning. From here, you have to go uphill a short walk, about 5-10 minutes. You can go downhill in the terrain, more steeply. Or, to be gentler, with asphalt excluded from car traffic.
An alternative to the car is access by public transport. Buses run to Spišské Podhradie, from where you can walk to the castle. That's about a 20–30 minute walk.

Visiting Spiš Castle - how much does a ticket cost? - practical information

The castle is open to tourists from April to November at designated times. Walk along the prepared sightseeing route. The castle consists of 3 parts: lower, middle and upper. Walking independently, you enter the castle through the gate from the south-east, behind which there is a cash register building, toilets, a small restaurant and a souvenir shop. Behind the buildings, you go to the lower courtyard, where the circle of walls and the remains of a 15th-century powder tower have survived. But the best starts on the other side of the courtyard.  In May 2026, we unfortunately found ourselves revitalizing the upper castle. For this reason, most of the interiors were temporarily unavailable. In return, the ticket price was reduced ((€12 - PLN 52). It is worth reserving about 60 minutes for a peaceful sightseeing, although usually with interiors it is even 2 hours.

One of the biggest attractions is the possibility of climbing the tower, which you enter through narrow corridors. Why are they so narrow? This was to make it easier for the defenders to fight the attackers: one knight defended against only one attacker at a time. From the observation deck on the tower, you can admire magnificent views - a 360-degree panorama of the rolling countryside, the Tatras in the background and the town of Podgród.

Despite the limitations, the sightseeing is very impressive. Due to the views of the castle itself and from the castle, it definitely reminds me of our Ogrodzieniec na Jury, while due to its size of several hundred meters, it reminds me of fortresses in Albania. Walking through the walls and courtyards, you can imagine the life of the medieval inhabitants of the castle. Spectacular views stretch not only from the tower, but also from other levels. In the castle there are also museum exhibitions presenting the history of the region, armaments and everyday life of the former inhabitants. In the summer season, historical shows, reconstructions and events for tourists are organized, which additionally make the visit more attractive. It is worth preparing for a lot of walking and uneven ground, and comfortable shoes are a must. But beware! The ground, which is often large stones, are very slippery and it is very easy to slip. Be especially careful on the narrow stairs to the tower, it is very slippery and easy to hit the wall.

Film Conspiracy Castle - The Last Dragon and others

The values of the Spiš castle were appreciated by filmmakers. Spiš Castle often appears in film and television productions, mainly due to its raw, authentic form. The lack of modern buildings around makes this place perfectly reflect the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. It is this "wildness" and monumentality that attract filmmakers from different countries. For example, the film "The Last Dragon" was made here, in which the dragon was voiced by Sean Connery himself. The films "The Last Legion" and "The Lion in Winter" were also filmed here. No wonder, in changing weather, when clouds gather over the castle, and the light emphasizes its dramatic silhouette, you can feel really special and there is little to add to create an amazing scenery.

Spišský hrad - history

The Spiš castle was built as early as in the 12th century, as an element protecting the border of the Kingdom of Hungary. The oldest mention of the castle dates back to 1120. It quickly took on its current size, placing it among the largest castles in Central Europe. And in the Middle Ages it was a city within walls. Not the castle itself, but simply the whole city, where even a few hundred people lived. Over the centuries, the castle was still being expanded and changed owners. He belonged, among others, to the Zapolye and Thurzon families. He performed military, administrative and residential functions. In its walls there were workshops, warehouses, as well as representative rooms.

The end of the castle came by accident, because of inattention. Apparently, by drying the grain, the servants inadvertently lit a fire and the flames consumed this beautiful monument in the 18th century. Since then, it has remained a picturesque ruin. After the fire, the castle was not rebuilt, which paradoxically contributed to its present-day charm. The ruins have retained their authentic character and have become one of the most valuable monuments of the region.

Conspiracy Chapter and other attractions in the area

On the other side of the village there is another monument from the UNESCO list. This is the Conspiracy Chapter. This place is called the "Slovak Vatican". Since the 12th century, this town belonging to the ecclesiastical authorities has been managing the conspiracy diocese. Its heart is the cathedral from the 13th century, where you will find gothic altars. The Spiš Chapter is a perfectly preserved religious complex with defensive walls, canonries and St. Martin's Cathedral. A walk around this place allows you to travel back in time and see what the life of the clergy looked like in the Middle Ages.

It is also worth visiting Spišské Podhradie itself – a small, atmospheric town with historic buildings. The Spiš region also offers numerous hiking and cycling trails, and its peaceful, rural character is a great getaway from crowded resorts. In the wider area, I also recommend:
