Sóller in Mallorca is a picturesque but very crowded town in the valley of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. Known for its beautiful landscapes, rich history and the historic cable car that takes tourists to Port de Sóller. Often referred to as the "City of Oranges" or even the "Valley of Oranges", Soller is famous for its citrus cultivation.

Attractions Soller in Mallorca - what to see in the city?

The town of Sóller impresses with its architecture and unique climate on the west coast of Mallorca. The most famous attraction of the city, however, is the famous historic tram from the 20th century, which takes tourists from the market for a cool retro ride. But this is not the only curiosity and, for example, the church in the main square definitely charmed me more. Here are the most beautiful Soller tourist attractions to visit!

The historic tram in Soller (El Tranvia de Sóller)is a famous attraction for which the city is famous. It runs every dozen or so minutes and takes tourists from the main square to the port. During the ride, you can count on beautiful views. Interestingly, the orange tram still hides the original wagons from 1912. These open ones come from 1954. The view of the tram on the streets of the city is really amazing!

Port of Soller - Port de Sóller 

The port of Soller or Port de Sóller is a very charming marina that offers beautiful beaches and numerous restaurants serving fresh seafood. As in all of Majorca, beautiful views and landscapes await you here. In addition, sea cruises are organized here, and if you feel up to it, you can rent a boat yourself. Walk along the promenade along the marina.

Lighthouses in Soller

There are 2 lighthouses in the bay. The white and black Punta de Sa Creu lighthouse from 1862 stands on a promontory at the eastern entrance to the port. On the west side there is Faro de Cap Gros (accessible only from behind the fence). From here you will see a beautiful view beyond the bay and the harbour.

The narrow streets lead to the Plaça de sa Constitució. This is the market square, the main square of the city, which is decorated with the beautiful church of St. Bartholomew (Església de Sant Bartomeu). The current temple has grown into a Gothic one and captivates with its modernist façade, designed by Gaudí's pupil. It is also worth paying attention to other modernist buildings. Next to the church stands the bank building (Banco de Sóller), which was designed by the same architect. In general, I must admit that the development of Mallorca has a very positive impact on its reception. She is well-groomed, harmonious and lovely.

When you sit in one of the many cafes on the market and sip coffee or orange juice, tasting exceptionally here, you hear the clatter of historic tram wheels every now and then. This place has its undeniable charm, although for us, there are too many tourists here.

If you do not have a rental car in Mallorca, you will easily get to the city from the capital of Palma. A historic train runs here. It is a popular means of transport in this area. The railway is wooden and is over 100 years old! It has been operating continuously since 1912. In the past, she used to carry citrus fruits, and today she carries enchanted tourists. On the way, they can see spectacular views of the mountains and valleys. It's called Red Lightning or Vitamin C Express.

Experiences in the area

The surroundings of Sóller offer many opportunities for hiking and cycling. The trails lead through beautiful mountain areas and citrus groves. A popular destination for excursions is also the area of Puig Major, the highest peak of Mallorca with an altitude of over 1,400 m above sea level. Although the peak itself is an inaccessible military area, there are many trekking trails in the area. In a short distance, it is also worth visiting other interesting towns - Fonalutx and Valldemossa, and at the northern end of Mallorca, be sure to visit Cape Formentor.

History of Sóller

Sóller's history dates back to prehistoric times. The first traces of settlement come from the 4th-3rd century BC. The key moment in the history of the town was the pirate invasion in 1561, when the inhabitants fought to defend their city. Legend has it that residents armed only with agricultural tools resisted the attackers and recovered the image of Our Lady of Victory, which became the basis of the annual Es Firó festival commemorating this event.

In the 19th century, Sóller gained importance thanks to the citrus trade. That is why it is sometimes called the city of oranges today. In 1912, a railway line was established connecting the city with Palma de Mallorca. This combination enabled the development of tourism and economic growth of the region. The train running to this day is called "Red Lightning". He no longer carries oranges, but tourists from all over the world. 

Soller, although very charming, did not make such a positive impression on us, because it was very crowded. I recommend you stop by for a moment to experience its atmosphere, but in the long run it is tiring. There are several paid parking lots in the city, but in October they were full, we circled around a few times and found a paid place finally on one of the streets a little away from the center.

Accommodation in Mallorca

While visiting Mallorca, we slept in El Arenal, adjacent to Palma, the capital of the island. It is an interesting place with a bay, souvenir shops and many restaurants. It's not super quiet here, and our Hostel Atlanta accommodation wasn't very high, but compared to other accommodation on the island, it was really cheap here. We paid PLN 900 for 4 nights for 2 people. On the plus side, there is a communal and equipped kitchen with equipment, and a slightly poor bathroom.
