Puck is a small seaside town located on the Bay of Puck, which has just taken its name from the main city. Already in the 9th century, a port was built here, which later  went down in the history of Poland as the place of Poland's marriage to the sea. Currently, Puck is secluded, but definitely worth a visit. All of Puck's attractions can be seen in one day, and then relax in a tavern with fresh fish.

Getting to Puck

Puck is located in the central part of the Gulf of Puck coast. You can easily get here from the Tri-City from the south, as well as from Jastrzębia Góra from the north. It is about 50 km from Gdańsk, and less than 20 km from Jastrzębia Góra. There is a paid car park near the rectory in Puck, at Zamkowa Street. It is a place from which it is close to all the attractions of the city. Unfortunately, it does not offer very many places.

Puck experiences - a map of places to see

Puck is not a big city. A few hours walk is enough to get to know the most interesting attractions of Puck, with a parsonage, an impressive pier and an interesting market. The area, with its valuable nature and the Baltic coast, is also worth exploring.

The rectory in Puck - the church of St. Peter and Paul

The parish church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul dates from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This squat temple is one of the oldest churches in Pomerania, because it was built on a Romanesque temple from the 13th century. At the same time, it is the most valuable monument of the city, which introduces it in a way. The interior of the temple is distinguished by a beautiful decor with an 18th-century high altar and the Wejherów chapel.

Port, green beach and pier in Puck

Footsteps always carry me to the water, if only there is one in the place I visit. Here, the waters of the Baltic Sea spill almost behind the church. The Fisherman's Port with a wedding pillar invites you here. This symbolic post commemorates the marriage of Poland to the sea, which was made by General Haller on February 10, 1920. Next to the post stands the bust of the same general. Haller then threw a ring into the waters of the Baltic Sea, thus sealing Poland's regaining access to the sea.

Today, Poles are eager to take advantage of this opportunity and relax on the green beach. It is not very spacious, in terms of size it resembles a beach on lakes rather than on the Baltic Sea, but the waters are very calm here.

Into the sea there is a large and spectacular pier, available to tourists free of charge. A restaurant was built on it. However, we chose a different, climatic place, as I write below.

Walking along the coastline in Puck, you can admire the natural charms of the Puck Bay. It is a great place for water sports enthusiasts.

Old Market Square in Puck

Visiting Puck is worth starting from the Old Market Square, which is the main square of the city and a popular meeting place. Rarely do seaside towns boast a large and charming market. It's different with Puck. The main square here is very pleasant, surrounded by tenement houses from the second half of the 19th century. They were built on old, medieval foundations, because the buildings suffered from numerous wars, starting with the Swedish Deluge. On the market square there is the neo-Gothic Old Town Hall, an illuminated fountain and a flower clock in the shape of a rose of the wind, which was created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Polish independence and an interesting bench.

Puck Herb Bench

Puck bet on benches, which we highly praise. The Herb Bench attracts attention on the market. There is a salmon and a lion, i.e. animals that appear in the Puck coat of arms. Why salmon? Well, that's kind of obvious, because it's a fishing village. And where did the lion come from? For several years, the Swedish and Norwegian king, Charles VIII Knutsson Bonde, lived here, who was expelled from his homeland. Perhaps this is a souvenir of this event. Or simply because Gdańsk, nearby, was dominant over Puck.

Mariusz Zaruski's bench in Puck

Puck Muzeum

A monument in the shape of a Bench with a sculpture by Mariusz Zaruski stands at the entrance to the pier in Puck. At the intersection of Lipowa Avenue and Kościuszko Avenue. He is a pioneer of Polish sailing, and at the same time the starost of Puck from 1926-27. The monument is the work of the Gdańsk artist Stanisław Szwechowicz, it was unveiled in 2014.

Monument to a carp in Puck

A bench of Polish carp in a historical outfit is unusual. And who is a privateer? You could call him a legitimate pirate. In 1456, Kazimierz Jagiellończyk built the first privateer fleet.

Experiences in the area

  • Rzucewo Castle - an impressive castle-shaped palace from the 19th century, in the town of Rzucewo, hiding a restaurant and a hotel
  • Fok Hunters Settlement - an interesting open-air museum
  • Sławutowo settlement - this Slavic settlement in Sławutowo is extremely interestingly reconstructed and presented. The castle consists of 8 huts, which remind us of the distant, pre-Christian times, a thousand years ago. In individual huts there are "residents" who tell extremely interesting stories, including about herbalism, about militaria or about what was eaten at that time.
  • Witch Gardens - a family amusement park at the garden center. Fairytale characters, numerous attractions for children and swimming pools are a great way for family recreation.
  • Beka Reserve - protects salty meadows, i.e. the so-called brackish meadows. Unique plants and animals live here. It is an asylum for birds, but we also met Polish horses here. A loop 3.5 km long can be passed from under the observation tower
  • Rewski promontory - called a jewel by the locals. It is formed by a sandy scythe about 1 km long, which crosses the waters of the Puck Bay. How pleasant it is to walk here, we were before sunset and it was wonderful, but this moment had one big minus, a large number of tourists. It's much calmer in the morning.

History of Puck

The beginnings of settlement in Puck date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. In the 9th century, a port was built here. In the second half of the thirteenth century, there was a castellan's stronghold of East Pomeranian princes in Puck. Already in the 9th century there was a port here, but there are very few medieval monuments left. In 1348, Puck received the city rights of Chełmno from the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Dusemer. In 1457, the king of Sweden, Charles VIII Knutsson Bonde, took refuge here, and in 1466 Puck was incorporated into Polish Royal Prussia. During the reign of Sigismund Augustus, Batory and Władysław IV Vasa, Puck was a fortress and a base of the Polish fleet. It was the first Polish war port. In the first weeks of 1920, Puck became part of Poland, and on February 10, 1920, the marriage of Poland to the sea took place here, with the participation of General Józef Haller.

Restaurants in Puck

If you are a "team fish", we have a nice recommendation. Between the parish and the port there is a great frying room Maszoperia u Budzisza. It is a popular restaurant in Puck, worth the interest. She is considered the best in this city. The number of tourists confirms this. We ate flounder and halibut here. The decor is very cool, Kashubian, decorated with local sentences. He looks directly at the sea from here. The Pierogarnia Mąka i Woda near the rectory and the Rynek 23 Restaurant are also worth recommending.

Accommodation in Puck

While visiting the attractions of the Bay of Puck, we stayed in the Rzucewo Castle. It is true that the castle is only in name, but the object is really noble. The current building was built as a neo-Gothic palace for the von Below family in the mid-nineteenth century. From the 16th century, the manor house of the famous Wejherów district stood here. Over time, it fell into the hands of King Jan III Sobieski himself, because his own sister offered it to him. The king was only in this area a few times, but his beloved Marysieńka resided here more often.
After years of neglect, the palace in Rzucewo is now beautifully revitalized. The surroundings are stunning, with a beautiful garden, horses and a beach at your fingertips. It was great to spend a few nights here, in these elegant interiors and enjoy delicious breakfasts on the terrace, especially since the prices are not prohibitive for such a facility. And if not for longer, you can come for a moment, for coffee or dinner.
