Moszna Castle. Fairytale Palace in Moszna. Sightseeing and price list
The castle in Moszna is one of the most famous, recognizable and most beautiful tourist attractions not only in the Opole region, but also in the whole of Poland! It does not present much architectural value, as it is only a little over 100 years old. It also does not present a specific style, but amazes with the imagination of the creators, the ingenuity of the detail and the magnificence of the general public. When approaching this building, it is difficult to resist the impression that you are entering the magical world of a fairy tale and the queen's castle.
Palace or castle in Moszna?
Moszna Castle, or in fact the fabulous Palace in Moszna, is an unusual object of great beauty, called a castle because of its appearance. In fact, it was never a castle, because it was built as a palace at a time when castles were no longer built. The first building was erected here in the 18th century, and later, after the fire, it was rebuilt and extended with two more wings. Neo-Gothic for the family of industrial tycoons and neo-Baroque for the service and guests. This took place at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
99 towers and turrets of the Moszna Castle
In the past, the entire palace and park complex was the residence of one family. Of the German Tiele-Winckler family, from the mid-nineteenth century to the end of World War II. The palace in Moszna, although it is not a historical castle, creates such an impression, because according to the legendary fantasy of Franz-Hubert Tiele-Winckler, it has 365 chambers and as many as 99 towers, for which the building is famous.
Why 99 and not 100? For 100 towers, the count would have to pay a tax, and additionally maintain a detachment of the army in front of the residence. During the guided tour, you climb two towers. The first allows you to go out on the balcony, the second - the highest in the whole building, allows you to go around it and admire the vastness of the entire palace and the wide area, including the Opava Mountains in the distance.
Visiting the castle in Moszna
For years, the historic castle interiors housed the Neurosis TherapyCenter. It was a psychiatric hospital where civilization diseases were treated. Currently, however, medical services have been moved to a newly built facility nearby, also in the area of the historic park. In the renovated palace in Moszna, a Hotel and Restaurant were built.
The castle interiors are also open to the public. Finally, this wonderful object is used in the way it is best suited for. And there is never a shortage of tourists here and it is not surprising, because the building is really impressive. We have already admired these walls and towers and turrets sticking out here and there, adding significantly to the charm of this place.
Outside the tourist season, admission to the palace park is free, in the high season, to enter the palace area, you need to buy a separate ticket, in addition to the inside.
Individual tour
Tickets for a traditional individual tour of the castle (palace) are purchased separately. Then you will see the Count's magnificent study, his Golden Suite, library, gallery, bedroom and other corners. I was most impressed by the office, huge and beautiful, and a tiny door leads to it.
Apparently, the short count liked it when others, entering the office, had to bow to him a little by the way. There is also a former mirror room on the route of individual sightseeing. Today, mirrors are replaced by paintings, for safety reasons. This happened during the times when people with neuroses and other civilization diseases were treated in the palace.
Guided tour
A separate, more expensive ticket is a guided tour, during which you visit, among others, cellars, former warehouses, a historic elevator and its mechanism, a wooden room, a hunting hall and towers. The highest one allows you to walk around the terrace and admire the immensity of the building and the beautiful landscape of the area, with the Opava Mountains in the background. Visiting the facility, you get to know many interesting facts, such as the fact that the Count's elevator operated until the day of his death.
Then it broke and when they wanted to repair it, it ended tragically. The person repairing the mechanism either had an accident or someone close to him was killed. Repairs have been omitted and it has been said since that the curse is hanging over the elevator and that it was the Count's doing. Extreme night sightseeing is also possible at the Moszna Castle. There is a hotel and a restaurant, located next to a beautiful conservatory. The whole attracts many guests all year round, and on summer Sundays it is crowded here. No wonder, it is easy to get here on the A4 motorway.
History of the palace in Moszna
The name of the village probably comes from the surname Moschin. The family came to the Liaison parish in the fourteenth century. If you believe the legend, the Scrotum in the Middle Ages belonged to the Knights Templar. However, it is certain that in 1679 the local lands were owned by the von Skall family. In 1723, after the death of the owner Ursula Maria von Skall, this land passed into the hands of her cousin - Marshal of the court of Frederick the Great, Georg Wilhelm von Reisewitz. The central part of today's palace comes from this period.
In 1771, the von Reisewitz family lost the property that Heinrich Leopold von Seherr-Thoss bought during the auction. In the mid-nineteenth century, Karl Gotthard Seherr-Thoss sold the Moszna to Heinrich von Erdmannsdorf. And it was from him that Hubert von Tiele-Winckler bought it in 1866. Son-in-law of Franz Winckler - a miner from the mine in Miechowice, who married Maria Aresin. This one, in turn, was the widow of the owner of the mine.
While still alive, Franz obtained a knighthood from the Prussian king and expanded the palace in Miechowice in Upper Silesia. His daughter Valeska, an heiress of the estate, married Hubert von Tiele in 1854 and it was he who bought Moszna.
Franz Hubert von Tiele-Winckler builds a new castle
This is where the most important part of the history of the castle, or rather the palace, begins. Hubert's son, Franz Hubert, came up with the idea of building a new "house" after the previous one partially burned down in 1896. This first assumption is located in the central part of the building, and two wings have been added from the sides.A year earlier, Franz had received the title of count from Emperor Wilhelm.
Very quickly, he not only rebuilt the Baroque palace, but significantly expanded his seat. Interestingly, 15 people of the count's family served 150 people of the service! Do you remember that the facility had 365 rooms? This perfectly reflects the momentum that prevailed in this place. And you will see it to this day in interiors that can be visited individually or on a longer guided tour.
During its greatest glory, this property was visited several times by the ruler of Germany - Emperor William II, during joint hunts. And it was for him that the western wing was created in 1911-13. Later, it was not so colorful. Franz-Hubert and his wife Jelka Marek Clementine Geogine von Lepel had 6 children - 2 sons and 4 daughters. The eldest son lived a very short life, while the younger - Claus-Peter, in the interwar period consumed part of his fortune and dying childless, he adopted his cousin.
His family lived here until the end of the war, after which they fled to Germany from the incoming Russian army. After the war, the fate of the castle varied until the present day, when it regains its former glory and welcomes distinguished guests back to its doorstep.
Park in Moszna
The palace is surrounded by a huge landscape park with old trees, sprawling rhododendron and azalea bushes and a beautiful linden alley. It is a beautiful place for walks and one of the largest and most valuable parks in the entire Opole Voivodeship.
The historical park in Moszna had no boundaries and connected with forests, fields and nearby villages. Only the main axis of the entire assumption is geometric. The garden facade passes through a wonderful and spectacular staircase to the garden with a fountain, behind which a historic linden alley begins. It will take you to a marble plinth. This is the remains of the monument to Hubert von Tiele-Winckler, who lives in this residence. On both sides of the avenue, 19th-century canals have been preserved, created on the model of the Dutch and French styles. Here and there pedunculate oaks grow here. Extremely large.
Deep down, ponds are spilling out. On the eastern side of the linden alley there is a pond with a beautiful islet. The Kalusznik pond (or Kałużnik) also spills in the Park. The extraordinary beauty of the park in Moszna encourages long walks and admiration for nature and architecture.Nearby, you will also encounter a necropolis, hiding the ashes of the former owners of these lands. In the vicinity, it is worth visiting the Scrotum Horse Stud Farm, where Olympic horses are bred.
Music Festival of the Blossoming Azalea
The village is famous for its large, colorful azalea bushes, which can be found in many places in the park. Every year in May, even the castle hosts the Music Festival of the Blossoming Azalia - a festival of classical music. The name comes from the fact that these beautiful flowers bloom here, reaching really impressive sizes. They welcome tourists along the road leading to the castle. These oldest azaleas and rhododendrons can be admired along the linden avenue, in the north-eastern part of the park, behind the fountain.
