Monuments and attractions in Międzygórze. What's worth seeing? Experience map

Międzygórze is a very original and peculiar health resort famous for its wooden, historic buildings in the Swiss style, which is rarely found in other towns in Poland. The houses and guest houses were built in the Tyrolean and Norwegian styles, thanks to which they blend nicely with the surrounding peaks and mountain landscapes. Many guesthouses are renovated, others are still waiting for care. The most interesting facilities include the "Gigant" sanatorium, two churches standing next to each other and one of the highest waterfalls in Poland. In addition, hiking, cycling and horseback riding trails have been created for tourists. In winter, however, ski lifts will make the day more enjoyable. Here are the best attractions in Międzygórze!

Wilczki Waterfall in Międzygórze and a stone tower

The most popular attraction that attracts tourists from all over Poland is the extremely picturesque, powerful Wilczki Waterfall, located not far from the center, among the forest. Did you know that it is one of the highest waterfalls in Poland? The natural wonder of the region, the Wilczki waterfall is as high as 22 meters! And what is interesting, in the nineteenth century it was artificially built. In total, it was about 27 meters, but nature stood up for itself, because during the flood of the millennium in 1997, the water force broke this, let's call it, superstructure. The waterfall is located near the road, where a paid car park awaits. From the footbridge, under which it can only be seen from above. Approximately 200 meters up the stairs to the viewpoint, to the opposite rock. From here we have it like on the palm of our hand! You will also reach here by a forest walking path from the village centre. And while we are here, you can climb even higher up the numerous steep stairs to see the tower above the waterfall - a powerful last resort with a height of 10 meters. From here, to the right, we will also go down to the village, but up the hill, and if you go from the tower to the left, then along the Main Sudeten Route marked in red, you will reach the Garden of Fairy Tales, and then to the Spire.

Garden of Fairy Tales in Międzygórze

The Garden of Fairy Tales will surely appeal to the youngest tourists. This small garden was built at the beginning of the 20th century on the steep slope of Lesieniec. Among the greenery and flowers, interesting sculptures have been lost here. Usually made of roots and branches of trees, fairy-tale motifs: figurines, totems, gazebos, etc. The Garden of Fairy Tales is located by the yellow trail leading from Międzygórze to the Sanctuary on the Spire Mountain. You will reach it when you climb the stairs under the stone tower from under the Wolf Falls, follow the red trail to the left, and then turn yellow from there.

Wofelsgrund Sanatorium "Gigant" in Międzygórze

The most impressive and impressive building of Międzygórze, especially due to its size, is the sanatorium "Wofelsgrund" from 1882. Today, it is simply called the Giant, because its size is actually quite impressive. It is one of the largest wooden buildings in Europe. When it was established in the nineteenth century, it served the aristocracy, and after the war, when it was nationalized, it began to serve as a place of the first workers' holidays. Unfortunately, the condition of the entire building and the turret, which is slightly sloping, is a bit depressing. You can see some ongoing work around, so I hope that someone will be able to save him before he completely wastes away.

Villas and guesthouses in Międzygórze

In the heart of the village and on the Sanatorium Street winding upwards, there are also other guest houses and villas, in various state of maintenance. Those in the center could use more care, the Golden Horn or Villa Millennium attract attention here. On the other hand, those on Sanatoriumnia Street are largely well-groomed. Today, they perform mainly accommodation functions. These light, intricate decorations of porches and terraces are beautiful. This creates an extremely coherent picture of an idyllic village native to Austria. Each building here is a kind of gem, and especially charming are: Willa Winkler, Sarenka, Willa Trebla, Willa Klara or Pepita.

Wooden Church of St. Joseph the Bridegroom of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Międzygórze

Two churches standing literally next to each other are also an attraction in Międzygórze. One wooden, the other brick, standing above the first one. The wooden one by the main road is the church of St. Joseph the Bridegroom of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It stands opposite the Złoty Róg restaurant, and was built in 1740-42. An interesting fact is that until 2001, the roof of the temple was covered with slate, because it was unique in the region at that time. Slate came from the Polish Sudetes, and it was removed during the renovation of the church and a shingle was laid. In this way, the condition of the building from the 18th century was restored.

Church of the Holy Cross in Międzygórze

The brick church of the Holy Cross was picturesquely located on the slope. It dates back to the 20th century, or more precisely from 1910-11, and originally served evangelicals. It was founded by Friedrich Heinrich von Hohenzollern with the support of the Evangelical Gustav Adolf Association. Currently, this interesting neo-Romanesque temple serves an auxiliary function for the Roman Catholic parish in Międzygórze.

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows on Mount Iglicna (845 m above sea level) is a pilgrimage church with a figure crowned by John Paul II in 1983. Karol Wojtyła visited the place twice. These are beautiful walking areas, and additionally with a nice view. The yellow hiking trail and the red Main Sudeten Route lead from Międzygórze to Iglicna. You can also get to the green through the dam. You will not get tired because they are not very steep and long.

Śnieżnik - the highest peak of the Eastern Sudetes with a tower and a hostel

Międzygórze is an ideal base for the highest peak of the Śnieżnik Massif and the Eastern Sudetes. It is Śnieżnik with a height of 1423 m above sea level with an impressive tower at the top. In good weather, the views from here are breathtaking, especially at sunrise. Śnieżnik belongs to the Crown of the Polish Mountains. From Międzygórze, you will reach the hostel in 3 hours via the red trail (Main Sudeten Route). Then follow the green trail to the summit in 30 minutes. A high and free observation tower awaits here. The peak is located in the Śnieżnicki Landscape Park.

Bear Cave - the most beautiful cave in Poland!

Śnieżnik

The Bear Cave in nearby Kletno is considered the most beautiful cave in Poland. Only theParadise Cave from Chęciny can match it, but the one in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship is significantly smaller. And the Bear is still flourishing and there are plans to significantly increase the sightseeing route. It is necessary to arrange a visit to the cave due to quantitative restrictions in order to maintain a stable underground microclimate.

Where to eat and sleep? Accommodation in Międzygórze

In almost every house in the center of the village, there are guest rooms, a restaurant or a cafe. Often all at once, next to the waterfall, the Dom Nad Wodospadem restaurant is waiting by the parking lot. We ate in this "Tyrolean" village in the "Alpine Manor". Standing on the sidelines, this historic building is 100 years old and you can drink coffee or eat something warm inside. We tasted onion soup and sourdough, as well as dumplings and dessert. Everything was homely and tasty, and nicely served. On the other hand, we slept in the nearby Długopol-Zdrój in the Eliza Manor, but if you want to stay in Międzygórze, check out the map below and you will surely find an interesting offer.

The history of Międzygórze. Bloom thanks to Marianna Orańska

The first settlements in these areas were established in the 16th century. Lumberjacks and charcoalworkers settled here, and the oldest mention dates back to 1576. In the 17th century, iron ore was mined here, and later forestry and weaving developed. After the Thirty Years' War, the economy collapsed. In the nineteenth century, there was a breakthrough, because Princess Marianna of Orange transformed the village into an extremely atmospheric resort with Swiss buildings. Before 1945, this "Tyrolean" village was teeming with hotels, slopes and tobogganing. The pleasures here were mainly enjoyed by the rich. After World War II, the Germans were displaced, the name was changed to Międzygórze, and popular workers' holidays began to be organized in the abandoned centres during the Polish People's Republic. And so we passed from the aristocracy to the people. Today, this historic development is somewhat neglected in some places and requires care, but there are also well-maintained guest houses that delight with their charm. We were enchanted by Międzygórze. It is not surprising that Princess Marianna once admired these areas.
