Malbork at a glance, or hints for you

  • Schedule about 3 hours to visit the castle, you can buy tickets online
  • The castle looks beautiful from the other side, it is worth crossing the St. Adalbert Bridge and eating in the Tavern U Flisaka, with a wonderful view
  • I highly recommend a Nogat cruise. The marina is located under the castle, it is a fun adventure and the opportunity to admire the beautiful Old Town from the surface of the water

  • For families with children, I recommend DinoPark with moving dinosaurs and dragons and live animals
  • You will find cheap city parking at the Pottery Gate, at Piłsudskiego Street (near the castle)

Malbork is a very popular city, picturesquely located in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, on the Nogat River, between Tczew and Elbląg. It gained fame mainly thanks to the powerful Teutonic fortress. There is no equal in Poland, and it is difficult to find a similar one in the world! This is a colossus that has made a huge impression since the Middle Ages to this day! Maria's Castle, as Marienburg is translated, is now well over 700 years old, it is covered by defensive walls, stretching over 5 km and consists of 3 complexes. It was the most exclusive residence of that time!

Attractions in Malbork, or what to see on the Nogat

Malbork in the wide world is known mainly from the Gothic Teutonic castle. Therefore, the tour often ends at the majestic castle that the monks left behind. The stronghold enchants with the spirit of the Middle Ages and intimidates with its panache and enormity. But doesn't Malbork itself deserve your attention? After visiting the stronghold, we went for a nice walk around this all too often overlooked city. And it has more tourist attractions to offer. Take a look at our guide to see what is worth seeing in and around Malbork.

Malbork

Malbork Castle

Malbork, the largest mud castle in the world. Why? Because it is built by a brick, and this one is made of clay. The beginnings of the Malbork stronghold date back to 1276, when the Teutonic Order came here and settled down over time, and more specifically the knights of the Order of the Hospital of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the German House in Jerusalem. The new town and fortress were named after Mary "Marienburg", and the Polish name is Malbork. Interestingly, at that time their capital was in Venice and it was not until 1309 that they moved it here. Since then, the castle has been constantly expanding, to unprecedented sizes, and even later.

The huge and beautiful Teutonic castle in Malbork is open to tourists in the form of the Castle Museum in Malbork. It is worth coming to the church of the high castle or the chapel of St. Anne, the former burial place of the great masters of the order. Today, the castle is over 700 years old, covers over 21 hectares of land, and is covered by defensive walls stretching over 5 km. This must be impressive! The fortress has been on the UNESCOWorld Heritage List since 1997, it is truly unique in the world.

Not only because of the size and momentum with which the Teutonic Knights built it, but also because of the authenticity of this place. Here you will feel the spirit of the times, you will see magnificent ceilings, dark alleys, beautiful views from the high tower, but you will also learn about the realities of life of those years. The Trail of Gothic Castles runs through Malbork. This is an extremely valuable monument that I highly recommend to you. Definitely worth a visit!

They are partially renovated, but unfortunately not used for tourism. There are also fragments of surviving city walls scattered here and there. Next to them there are multimedia kiosks as part of the External Fortification Museum.

Malbork, Bulwar

Above the wide branch of the Vistula, Nogat, you can set off on a cruise, e.g. to Biała Góra. Apart from the fortress, it was this attraction of Malbork that enchanted us the most. A boat trip on the Nogat offers indelible memories and beautiful views of the old town. We used the Malbork & Żuławy company, which has a marina under the castle. The tour costs PLN 25 per person (2023).

Church of St. John the Baptist in Malbork

This late Gothic temple dates back to the 15th century. It stands in the place of the first church in the city, which dates back to the late thirteenth century. The first mention of it appeared in 1319. The present temple was built on its foundations, using fragments of walls. To oriented, gothic bthree-nave, five-span, although originally six-span. With a row of shallow inter-pillar chapels.

The interior has preserved elements of decor from various eras, from Gothic (e.g. baptismal font or crucifix in the porch), through the Renaissance (including epitaphs), Rococo (altar of St. Stanislaus Kostka) to Neo-Gothic (including the main altar, pulpit or stained glass windows). This place is worth visiting in Malbork, because it is one of the most interesting attractions apart from the fortress, and it stands very close to it.

Monument to King Casimir Jagiellon in Malbork

The Jagiellonian Monument commemorates the victorious entry of the Polish king into Malbork in 1457, and the beginning of the so-called "Polish times", which lasted 315 years. The Jagiellonian Monument is entirely made of bronze and was unveiled in 2010. The sculpture depicts the king sitting on a horse and holding a scepter in his hand.

Interestingly, after the victorious Battle of Grunwald in 1410, the Polish army did not conquer the local fortress. The Poles settled down in these vast corridors only 47 years later, thanks to the son of Jagiełło, King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk. It is true that he did not get the massive building, but he bought it for about 670 kg of gold. Today, such a quantity is worth about PLN 180 million.

Thumbnail of Malbork Castle

Recently, you can admire a miniature castle in the city center. The model of the Teutonic stronghold was created on a concrete structure, and the details are made of brick, stone and steel. These are materials taken from the original construction of the Malbork stronghold. The artist consulted the final shape of the miniature with the employees of the Castle Museum. This copy of the castle took the shape and architectural details of the stronghold from 1938, so you can compare the changes that occurred in the post-war history of the building.

Where to park in Malbork?

We parked very cheaply in the parking lot at the Pottery Gate, at Piłsudskiego Street. It was spring and we found a place without any problems. Check this place first, before you are attracted by the expensive paid parking lot opposite, at Sierakowskich Street, next to the mock-up.

Where to eat in Malbork?

We tasted specialties from the barbecue in the Tavern at Flisak. It's a great place, offering tasty local beer, as well as coffee and something sweet. The most captivating thing here, however, is the wonderful view of the Malbork castle, because the Inn is located on the other side of the Nogat. By the bridge itself. And sitting at a table under a cloud, you have the whole castle in front of your eyes!
