Lower Silesia. Attractions worth visiting in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship

Lower Silesia is a beautiful and very attractive region in Poland. Loved by tourists, it is extensive and very diverse. You can visit it many times, and it will surprise you every time. We have traveled in Lower Silesia many times and got to know many of its charming corners, and we still have a lack of satisfaction and desire for further discoveries. We can successfully recommend you the best attractions of Lower Silesia. I hope this guide will help you plan a weekend or even a holiday in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship!

Attractions in Lower Silesia
Lower Silesia is an area belonging to Silesia, while maintaining its distinctiveness. Historical and cultural. It includes as many as three voivodships, all Lower Silesian and partly Opole and Lubusz. It is a real mine of tourist attractions. A land of magnificent castles and palaces, interesting villages with beautiful buildings and old mountains. These are the Sudetes extending in the south of the region and consisting of many separate ranges of a different nature. The red marked Main Sudeten Route leads here. But there are mysterious undergrounds in Lower Silesia, as well as typically family or mobilizing attractions, such as kayaks, pontoons and bicycles. Discover the best attractions of Lower Silesia that are worth visiting!

1. The Giant Mountains with Śnieżka in the west of Lower Silesia
The Giant Mountains are the highest and at the same time the most interesting part of the Sudetes. These are ancient mountains guarded by Liczyrzepa, the spirit of the mountains. Of course, the most famous here is Śnieżka with an altitude of 1602 m above sea level. It may not be dizzying, but it is still the highest point of the whole region. In addition, it's not that easy to get. You have to overlap a lot (not counting the possibility of climbing the lift to Kopa). Snow White and other valuable fragments of the Karkonosze Mountains are protected in the form of the Karkonosze National Park. Interestingly, the summit offers a magnificent panorama, reaching up to 200 km.
But there is a crow, Snow White is quite a capricious queen of the Sudetenland and is often misty. Fortunately, we were able to experience these wonderful views. We approached with a five-year-old on the blue trail from Karpacz, near the Wang Church and through the wonderful Samotnia shelter. It is a long but easy route. The entrance takes about 3 hours, but it's worth it! Other interesting places in the Giant Mountains are Szrenica, Mały and Wielki Staw and cross-country skiing trails in Jakuszyce.

2. Table Mountains with Szczeliniec Wielki and Wrong Rocks
The Table Mountains delight with their shape and unusual form. These are the most original mountains in Lower Silesia. From a distance, the flat peaks look just like a table. But that's not what attracts you most to these mountains. Fantastic outposts with amazing shapes encourage penetration of this corner. It is necessary to visit the Wrong Rocks. It is a kind of rock labyrinth, where you have to squeeze through the rocks in places. The wallet will feel this visit, because you pay both for parking and admission, but I recommend this place!
Szczeliniec Wielki (919 m above sea level) - the highest peak of the Table Mountains - is also waiting to be conquered here. The approach of the stone, historic stairs is already iconic and will not cause much difficulty even for children. There is a great viewing platform under the hostel, but I encourage you to enter the paid route at the top, in the Table Mountain National Park. Tickets are not expensive, and outcasts are very interesting. This is where, for example, the famous Monkey Man hid!

3. Zoo from Afrykarium in Wrocław
The Wrocław Zoo was ranked third among the attractions of Lower Silesia, because the Afrkarium raised this place to the world level. This is a bow to the children. We have 3 daughters and we know that family attractions on the tour are very important, and I don't know a child who doesn't like animals. Wroclaw Zoo is the oldest zoo in Poland, opened in the 19th century. And you'd think it would make it obsolete, but it's not. A lot is done here to make the catwalks ingenious and animal-friendly. On the other hand, the Afrikarium itself makes the jaw fall, we want to admire and visit such a zoo in Poland!

4. Czocha Castle
Czocha Castle is probably the most mysterious castle in Lower Silesia. Although it is quite secluded, it attracts numerous tourists. Hardly anyone has not heard of this castle. It is old, dark and you can see it at first glance. It is an intriguing adventure to penetrate its nooks and crannies, among walls that still remember the 13th century. Today, the castle is rebuilt in a romantic style, but you can still feel the aura of the Middle Ages, which, moreover, was liked to refer to when rebuilding at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Czocha Castle is open to tourists. The courtyard is available free of charge, while a paid tourist route leads through the interiors. In addition, a restaurant and a hotel were set up in the walls. Like many objects today, Czocha Castle offers a night tour, which gives you the thrill of excitement. During the day, set out to conquer the area, which presents itself very picturesquely, with Lake Leśniańskie and other castles, such as Świecie or Gryf.

5. Książ Castle and its surroundings
Cudny Zamek Książ is a Lower Silesian hit. It is true that it already stands on the Lusatian Land, but on the border with Silesia, in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. It is the third largest castle in Poland, after the Malbork Castle and the Wawel Castle. It is also definitely one of the most beautiful. Extremely impressive, with a rich history, it offers beautiful interiors. The Maximilian Hall is the most ornate here.
There are magnificent gardens around the castle. It is worth visiting the Książ Landscape Park, where the Hochberg Mausoleum awaits, interesting paths among nature and theruins of the Old Książ Castle. Under Książ Castle, you can recently visit the underground route belonging to the Riese Complex, and a few kilometers away, as part of the same ticket, the Palm House in Lubiechów

6. Barycz Valley
The Barycz Valley is a discovery that enchanted us. It is a natural paradise just north of Wrocław. It is amazing how close to the big city, barely 40 minutes by car, you can meet a wild land famous for birds and carp. Not everyone is aware, but you probably ate Milicz carp on Christmas Eve. Milickie Ponds - the heart of the Barycz Valley, is an unusual place that already served monks in the Middle Ages. They were the ones who put on the first joints, because fasting food was their everyday life. However, they had it easy because they also considered beavers with their tail covered with scales to be fish.
Returning to the Barycz Valley, I highly recommend this delightful corner. At the ponds you will meet unusual birds - white and gray herons, cranes, seagulls, a whole lot of ducks and, of course, swans. At sunrise, they miraculously flew over our heads, preying on the ponds. While the natural heart is the Milickie Ponds, the main city is Milicz with the Bombka Museum and a nice palace in the park. The ruins of the palace and the brick tower also delight in Żmigród. And if you like to spend time actively, you will be surprised what cool cycling and kayaking routes await you in the Barycz Valley.

7. Gold Mine in Złoty Stok
Another great family place in this list of the best attractions of Lower Silesia is the Gold Mine. It may not seem like it at first glance, but it's perfect for traveling with children. We checked on ourselves. Already a few years old will appreciate this place. There was a real gold mine here and during the tour you get to know the realities of hard work in this mine, but the guides do it so friendly and with such a dose of humor that visiting the Gold Mine is a real pleasure.
You walk the sidewalk of Death, take an orange underground train, admire the only underground waterfall in Poland, and that's still not all. After visiting the Mine, take the children to the nearby Medieval Mining Settlement, where you will use your own muscles to run the "old" machines.

8. Bear Cave in Kletno
In Lower Silesia, the Bear Cave cannot be overlooked. However, do not go there in the dark, the date must be booked first! It is, next to the Cave of Paradise in Chęciny, the most beautiful cave in Poland. I encourage you to get to know it, because it hides wonderful infiltrations. The Bear Cave is located in the reserve in Kletno, in the Śnieżnik Massif, so leave the car next to the Earth Museum in the parking lot and continue walking for about 20 minutes. There is a playground in front of the cave.
Bear Cave, Kletno 18, Silesian Site

9. Śnieżnik
Śnieżnik (1423 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Eastern Sudetes, belonging to the Crown of the Polish Mountains. It is also the highest peak of the Śnieżnik Massif, towering over this part of the Kłodzko Valley. The gable dome lies above the upper limit of the forest and is a great vantage point for the whole Sudetenland and the foothills, and even the Beskids. You can watch the sunrise from here. This is facilitated by the observation tower standing on top. Śnieżnik is a border peak, the peak is located on the Polish-Czech border.

10. Grodno Castle and Bystrzyckie Lake
Grodno Castle in Zagórze Śląski is one of my favorite castles in Poland! It is located on the reserve. The castle is beautiful and old. He will reveal his wonderful face to you if you give him a chance. The lower castle is available free of charge, you can eat here, and you have to buy a ticket for the upper castle and walk the route through its interiors. Since the 19th century, Grodno Castle has been open to tourists, which is no small curiosity. Today, outside the old walls, you will see a dungeon with the skeleton of a princess, a beautiful view from the tower and the Multimedia Bioeducation Center.
Be sure to take a look at Lake Bystrzyckie with an interesting path leading across the bridge. You will hear the multimedia singing of birds. The lake is beautifully located and offers a sandy beach, water equipment and a hotel with summer cottages.

11. Kamieńczyk Falls
Let's go back for a moment in the Giant Mountains to see the beautiful Kamieńczyk Waterfall in Szklarska Poreba. It is the highest waterfall in the Giant Mountains. And thus throughout the Sudetes, where you can see several other interesting waterfalls, such as Podgórna Falls. You have to approach the Kamieńczyk Waterfall from a paid car park, e.g. at Turystyczna Street in Szklarska Poręba.
It's a walk slightly uphill, about 30 minutes. You need to buy a ticket on site, as part of which you can also rent a helmet. A metal footbridge attached to the rocks leads to the waterfall itself. It is an interesting adventure, not too difficult and terrible, but carrying a certain dose of adrenaline. Already 4-5-year-olds can do it calmly. The threshold of the Kamieńczyk Waterfall is located at an altitude of 843 m above sea level, and the waterfall itself falls down to the beautiful Kamieńczyk Gorge by a three-stage cascade 27 meters high. The view is really worthwhile!

12. Grodziec Castle with the Land of Extinct Volcanoes
The Lower Silesian Land of Extinct Volcanoes is unique in Poland. It is located in the vicinity of the Kaczawskie Mountains and allows you to admire extremely interesting geological peculiarities, such as the Wielisław Organ. On the expired volcano there is also the Grodziec Castle, an interesting place for tourists. The castle is very original and it is difficult to confuse it with others. This dark, medieval castle, standing on a basalt cone with a height of 389 m above sea level. Like Śnieżka, it is the so-called outstanding peak, which means that it rises clearly above the area, so it gives beautiful, distant views!
But just visiting the castle gives a good impression, these old, dark walls can be overcome on their own, you can look into every corner, although in places you can not see much, because not every corner receives light. It is very atmospheric in Grodziec, and there is also a torture chamber in the cellars. Is it safe to sleep in the castle tower? 🙂
Grodziec Castle, Grodziec 111, Zagrodno

13. Silver Mountain Fortress
At the entrance to the attractive Kłodzko Basin, Srebrna Góra was picturesquely located, and in it the Srebrna Góra Fortress. A valuable military monument of the continent and one of the most important attractions of Lower Silesia. It is the largest mountain fortress in Europe, and exploring it is a real pleasure. He gives a tour of the Fortress in the historical costume of a soldier of the Napoleonic era and takes him on a journey to the times of the military functioning of these forts.
The fortress itself was built in the years 1765-77 by the order of the Prussian king Frederick II the Great, or actually it was built mainly because this king hated Poles and Slavs and when a Croatian shot at him, he stated that he would build a fortress and no one would ever shoot at him again. Officially, she was to defend Silesia. It used to be a prison, today you walk around the walls in a great mood.

14. Enduro routes
It is also worth taking a stroll along the beautiful Silver Mountain and taking advantage of the local Enduro routes. The Cycling Centre with bike rental, including electricians, is also available in Srebrna Góra.

15. Bolków Castle
Do you know where the name Bolkov came from and the castle that stands in it? Ano from Bolek I, who lived in these lands in the thirteenth century. This is how old the Gothic castle in Bolków is, because it was built during its time. Then a bow tower was created - the only example of this type of building in Poland today. Its height is 25 meters, and in the ground floor there is a so-called starvation dungeon. Bolków Castle is the oldest castle on the Piast Castles Trail. It attracts many tourists, although only its ruins have survived to the present day, as in nearby Świny, where other ruins of the castle also invite.

16. Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław
An article about Wrocław's attractions is available here, but Ostrów Tumski had to appear here. It is the historical heart of Wrocław, with the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and other Gothic and even Romanesque temples. It is the oldest inhabited part of the city with over 1,000 years of history. Ostrów Tumski is otherwise the Church Island, previously the Piasts resided here, but from the 11th century, i.e. from the founding of the bishopric, Ostrów became the center of ecclesiastical power.
Today, it is a magnificent ensemble of sacred architecture on a European scale, and at the same time one of the few such secluded corners of Wrocław, even magical, where the lighthouse keeper walks every day in the evening and lights gas lanterns, and extinguishes them in the morning. You can enter Ostrów 24 hours a day. Admission to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist - a stronghold of Polishness for centuries is free, but you pay for visiting the chapels for the chancel and the tower.

17. Palace in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki
On the hill above Kamieniec Ząbkowicki, there is a beautiful palace of Marianna Orańska. It is a real architectural pearl not only of Lower Silesia, but of all Poland! From afar, four red, round towers stand out, protruding above the branches of the trees. Because of this, the palace brings to mind the castle and is so often called. We have stood under this palace several times. The first time several dozen years ago, various stages passed at that time, it was so that the dogs wanted to devour the tourists, but now the palace has been raised from ruins and beautifully revitalized for many years. It is open to tourists and it is really worth stopping here for a few moments. The story of Marianna herself already makes a great impression. A brave woman who could take life into her own hands, and at the same time take good care of the region.

18. Valley of Palaces and Gardens
The wonderful attractions of Lower Silesia never end, the Valley of Palaces and Gardens is another wonderful place located in the western part of the region, in the Jelenia Góra Basin. You will find dozens of interesting historical objects here. Usually these are palaces, but also mansions or castle towers. Some are simply gorgeous, with lovely gardens or valuable landscaped parks. In some palaces, you can rent bicycles and admire the surrounding area from the perspective of a saddle. Be sure to visit the Palace in Wojanów, the Pakoszów Palace in Piechowice, the Palace on the Water in Staniszów Dolny, the Paulinum Palace in Jelenia Góra or the royal Karpniki Castle.

19. Tower in Siedlęcin
The Duke's Tower in Siedlęcin is an amazing object. Formerly known as knightly, today it is referred to as princely. Because it was founded by Prince Henry I Jaworski. It dates back to the 14th century and is the largest and best-preserved medieval residential tower in Poland, one of the largest towers of this type in Europe. It has an amazing atmosphere! Be sure to visit this place, because it hides surprises, such as medieval frescoes about Lancelot or the oldest ceilings in Poland, over 700 years old!

20. Churches of Peace in Świdnica and Jawor
The Church of Peace in Świdnica is the largest wooden church in Europe! It is strange that the construction of this temple is related to the end of the Thirty Years' War, when under the so-called Westphalian Peace, the Evangelicals from Świdnica received permission to build a modest church from impermanent materials (wood, clay and straw). Without a bell tower, outside the city walls. Currently, the beautiful, and at the same time extremely original and interesting in its form, Church of Peace has also been appreciated outside Poland and this unusual object from 1652-57 was entered on the UNESCO Heritage List. It is a real tourist magnet made available to visitors. A similar Church of Peace can be visited in Jawor and is also a UNESCO facility.

21. Basilica in Krzeszów
In a small Krzeszów near Lubawka, a huge basilica rises before your eyes. A beautiful baroque temple that is breathtaking, with towers 70 meters high! This is the Shrine of Our Lady of Grace, where you will find the largest Calvary in the region and a historic monastery that dates back to the 13th century. It was built by the Cistercians, creating a strongly developed weaving center in the area. Weaver's Houses in nearby Chełmsko Śląskie remind us of this. The entire complex in Krzeszów is available to tourists in the form of a Museum. It is one of the most valuable sacred monuments in Europe!
Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, John Paul II Square 1, Krzeszów

22. Old Mine in Wałbrzych
The Old Mine is actually a very modern version of the historic Wałbrzych Julia Coal Mine, and previously Thorez. The revitalization of this facility has made it possible for tourists to see the authentic buildings of the mine, equipment and machine, as well as to learn about the hardship of mining work. Visiting this complex was an interesting experience for us, it is also worth taking the elevator to the lookout point in the Old Mine, from where you will see the panorama of the mine itself, the city, but also the wonderful surroundings with picturesque peaks in the background, includingBorowa with the observation tower.
Stara Kopalnia, ul. Wysockiego 29, Wałbrzych

23. Riese Complex - Walim Adits and Underground of Książ Castle
The Riese complex is a topic that we do not want to overlook when describing and visiting Lower Silesia. Project Giant, because it is Riese from German, it is a Nazi military project. The largest mining and construction project of Nazi Germany, conducted in 1943-45. At that time, a number of underground tunnels and powerful bunkers were built in the Owl Mountains, in which weapons of mass destruction were to be produced. A new headquarters of Hitler was to be built under Książ Castle. Murderous work in excavating underground pavements took many lives. The entry of the Red Army interrupted the work and the project was never fully implemented. To this day, underground corridors have been preserved, fragments of which are available to tourists. These include, for example, the Walim Adits, or the Rzeczka Complex, or the recently opened Underground of Książ Castle.

24. Uranium mine in Kletno
The uranium mine is the most colorful adit in Poland. Not because of the lights, but the rainbow minerals that bloom here on the ceiling and walls. It is amethyst, fluorite, magnetite, chalcopyrite and others. In the past, uranium was mined here, today it is safe, relaxed and very interesting. The route is 400 meters long, it is worth taking something warm to wear, because the temperature is 7 degrees throughout the year.

25. Anvil in the Golden Mountains
The anvil 989 m above sea level is a peak in the Golden Mountains, included in the Crown of the Polish Mountains. It is not scenic, but still very nice. You will quickly reach here by the green trail from the parking lot in Bielice. The entire route is less than 4 km long.

26. Rudawiec in the Bialskie Mountains
Rudawiec 1112 m above sea level (you can also find information 1106 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Bialskie Mountains in the south of the Kłodzko Land. It is included in the Crown of the Polish Mountains. You will reach here the fastest green trail from the same parking lot in Bielice forester's lodge as to Kowadło. However, the route to this peak is longer, it is 10 km round trip

27. Roe deer Castle
The Sarny Castle in Ścinawka Górna gives the lie to the statement "Silesia, the land of dying palaces". It is an amazing complex, picturesquely located in the western part of the Kłodzko Valley, among the Ścinawskie Hills, in the central Sudetes. It is true that it still requires a lot of work, but it also has great potential. We were captivated by this place! We visited the interiors of the ruined building, tasted delicacies in the cafe and stayed overnight in the already renovated buildings of the farmhouse.
Sarny Castle - Scharfeneck, Ścinawka Górna 40e

28. Town Hall in Lwówek Śląski
The town hall in Lwówek Śląski is one of the most important monuments of the city and a pearl of the region. It dates back to the 13th century and happily survived the World War. Today, it combines Gothic and Renaissance styles. The interiors of the town hall hide original frescoes in the Courtroom. In addition, the Wedding Hall is richly decorated. There is also the Hunger Dungeon and the Chamber of Torture. The facility can be visited during the tourist season. It is a perfect example of urban architecture and is worth visiting while walking around the city.

29. Płakowice Castle
Płakowice Castle is currently located in the city of Lwówek Śląski. It is a magnificent Renaissance building from the 16th century. The first manor house was built in 1480, but in 1550 the von Schaffgotsch family rebuilt it into a beautiful castle. To this day, the building remains one of the largest Renaissance buildings in Silesia. Although very charming, it is quite neglected. It is in the hands of the Christian community, you can enter the courtyard free of charge, but the interiors are not accessible to visitors. Interestingly, in the 1950s Of the twentieth century, Korean children stayed in buildings near the castle for several years after the Korean War. As many as 1,000 children from North Korea found shelter here.

30. High Kick in the Jizera Mountains
Wysoka Kopa is the highest peak of the Jizera Mountains, rising to an altitude of 1126 m above sea level. It belongs to the Crown of the Polish Mountains, but you can not climb to its very top, because it is the mainstay of the black grouse. A plaque with a height and a stamp stands slightly lower, a few hundred meters from the top. It is best to start here from the Jizera Crossroads, a green or yellow trail, which together form an interesting loop.

Cities in Lower Silesia
The capital of the entire region is beautiful Wrocław, which in itself would be enough for a few days trip. In addition, Lower Silesia hides other, architecturally peculiar towns, with beautiful markets, such as Jelenia Góra, Świdnica, Kłodzko, additionally with the romantic Gothic Bridge and Fortress, secluded, somewhat underrated Bystrzyca Kłodzka, spa Kudowa Zdrój, Złotoryja or Wałbrzych with the beautifully revitalized Old Town and interesting Porcelain Museum. A unique city is Ząbkowice Śląskie from the Frankenstein Laboratory. In the north, it is worth visiting Milicz.

Is it worth visiting Lower Silesia?
Lower Silesia is a truly dream destination for several days of excursions, from which you will certainly bring unforgettable experiences, because in addition to architectural gems and mountain struggles, they offer an interesting landscape and fantastic views. And all this you will get to know by wandering or riding along densely scattered marked cycling routes and hiking trails. I even recommend a holiday in Lower Silesia, because no matter how much time you would not plan here, you will not be able to get to know all the attractions. It is definitely worth visiting Lower Silesia!

Where to sleep and eat in Lower Silesia?
In Wrocław, I recommend you Art Hotel located near the Market Square, in a historic tenement house, with a beautiful restaurant like a Mediterranean courtyard. In the Kłodzko Basin, I was delighted with the Kamieniec Palace, harmoniously decorated in the Gustavian style. Both the delicious restaurant and the rooms here are extremely tasteful and I really liked this place, located in a quiet place. Another hotel we checked out in the Kłodzko Valley is the Eliza Manor in Długopol Zdrój. And in the popular Kudowa Zdrój in the same Basin, we were delighted by Hotel Verde Montana. In Wałbrzych, the Old Mine offers modern rooms, while in the Giant Mountains we were welcomed by the Concordia Hotel and the beautiful Pakoszów Palace from the Valley of Palaces and Gardens. In the Barycz Valley, on the other hand, we checked out Hotel Naturum, which has ecology on the way. Everything suited me here, even as a plus I consider the loud chirping or actually the screaming of birds as early as 6 am. It was an unforgettable experience. There is a bike rental and 8 Fish Inn on site. Hubertówka in the Barycz Valley is also very hospitable and delicious.
Being in the south of the Kłodzko land, we slept in a unique place. There are 4 Elements - Yurts in the Sudety Mountains in Stara Morava in Lower Silesia, overlooking the lagoon. The place is delightful, so are the yurts. This is our third glamping and the best so far. Yurt offers everything but a TV and that's the best part. You know I didn't even realize he was gone? Łukasz made me aware, but also without regret. The yurts are luxurious, there is a bathroom with shower, air conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen with a fridge and dishwasher, a mezzanine bedroom, wifi and parking, a private terrace and a common place for a fire.
While visiting Legnica, we slept in a very nice Hotel Gwarna, which is located in the old town and offers a lot of attractions. There is a swimming pool, sauna, or a rooftop beach with a viewpoint and a beautiful panorama of the city. We were really impressed and the hotel is quite affordable. An additional advantage is free parking, and the proximity of the center means that you do not have to look for parking in the city, because to a large extent they are paid.
