Łódź attractions. What to see in Łódź? Manufaktura, Piotrkowska, Księży Młyn. Museums, murals, pubs

Manufaktura w Łodzi

Łódź is a city completely different from all others, with the famous Piotrkowska Street, wonderful architecture and unusual atmosphere. It is an amazing place with an interesting tourist offer, where everyone will find something for themselves. Personally, I really like Łódź and its factory, and today loft and modern character. With plenty of pubs and entertainment venues. This provincial city is located in central Poland, at the intersection of motorways and railway lines.

Did you know that the power of Łódź is based on delicate cotton? It clashed hard with the iron laws of business and the bloodthirsty tycoons who built incomprehensible estates, soullessly exploiting the workers. They left behind palaces with dazzling interiors, undamaged during the war, and old factories, great colossi made of bricks, into which a new spirit was breathed today.

Piotrkowska - Łódź in 1 day in a nutshell

Those who do not have much time to visit the capital of the region must at least walk through the famous Piotrkowska Street. It's a must see! It stretches over 4 km and begins at Plac Wolności. Around this road, the city developed and characteristic buildings became concentrated. Beautifully renovated, Art Nouveau and eclectic tenement houses, villas and magnificent palaces of former entrepreneurs rise here majestically. Finally, the complexes of 19th-century industrial architecture with the White Factory at the forefront. Did you know that there were about 700 factories in the city at one time? The landscape of the tract was strewn with chimneys at that time.

In addition, museums, pubs, restaurants, discos, art galleries and cinemas were created. There is also a magnificent archcathedral. In a word, everything. You can also see sculptures, monuments and other small architecture, e.g. Tuwim's Bench, Rubinstein's Piano, Teddy Bear, etc. On the walls of historic buildings, on the other hand, huge murals grow like mushrooms after rain. Piotrkowska Street in Łódź is a showcase of the city and by the way the longest promenade in Poland. Or maybe even in Europe! Although it is a conventional term, because the street is not deprived of car traffic.

It's a place for creative souls. The remnant of the factory, transformed into a climatic alley full of pubs, cafes or designer showrooms. It is nicely lit in the evening, so if you want to see Łódź at night, it is worth starting here.

Passage of the Rose at Piotrkowska Street

Rose's passage hid in one of the courtyards of the famous road, near Freedom Square. This unusual artistic vision is associated with the ragged experiences of the artist, Joanna Rajkowska and her daughter Róza. Soon after her birth, she was diagnosed with an eye cancer, and these slides in the elevation remind us how valuable and important vision is for us. Tourists like to visit it, because it is a recently popular point on the map of Łódź. The momentum of the work is quite impressive!

Manufaktura - worth seeing in Łódź

To this day, you can admire the traces of the city's industrial history in the city. When visiting Łódź, do not miss the popular Manufaktura shopping and entertainment center. This modern complex was built in the area of the former 19th-century textile factory of Izrael Poznański. His assets after his death were valued at 12 million rubles. For comparison, the monthly salary of the then weaver was about 12 rubles. The child, who could work in the factory after the age of 12, earned only 2 rubles for a month, which was enough for about 8 loaves of bread.

The plant operated here for 120 years, until the end practically using looms from the time of the creator. He imported them from England as the most modern machines in the world. Nevertheless, almost every day there were accidents, even fatal ones. If you want to feel the atmosphere of these times, we recommend the film by Andrzej Wajda - Promised Land

Today, a modern complex in former factory buildings with the highest spinning mill in the city, charms with boutiques, an entertainment zone and numerous pubs. I especially recommend the Factory Museum, which is small but very eloquent and commemorates the local heritage.

Next to it rises the beautiful palace of this industrialist. The most magnificent building in the city. Full of splendor, later called the Little Louvre. Among the cotton kings of Łódź, it was he who enjoyed the most sumptuous palace. At least from the outside, but also from the inside. Although he enjoyed this perhaps wrong term, because in fact the palace was finished after his death. Currently, it houses the Museum of the City of Łódź. While visiting them, you will admire the decor.

Why is it so impressive? Israel had previously worked for Scheibler, another fabulously wealthy manufacturer. That's probably why he wanted to show him who was the most important one in the city. He did not have a good reputation, he exploited employees to the core. Only with time, fitting into the fashionable image of a rich manufacturer and social worker at that time, did he fund orphanages, temples, schools for the poor and hospitals.

Heart of WOŚP

Did you know that here, in the center of Poland, the heart of the Orchestra beats? It is a new symbol of the city, unveiled in July 2022. It stands on the square next to the PURO Hotel, opposite the Israel Palace, the City Museum. They were unveiled by Jurek Owsiak, with the staffs of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. The heart is 3.5 meters high and you can see yourself in it like in a mirror. It was made by the Sino Sculpture Group collective, which implements projects in New York and Los Angeles.

The heart grows as if from the ground, and the modern and noble polished sheet without joints makes everyone take pictures here not with the heart, but "in the heart". Which reflects the generosity and collective action that we all show each year as part of the Orchestra Finals.

Księży Młyn w Łodzi

It's time to tell about the next king of cotton, which was Karol Scheibler. He settled on Księży Młyn and created a large, self-sufficient, industrial city here. There was a spinning mill, warehouses, gas stations, but also a hospital and a school, which was extremely rare. And on top of that, there were families, i.e. workers' houses made of brick. We know similar buildings in Silesia, but they are called familoki in our country. And you will find the most beautiful one in Nikiszowiec in Katowice.

Families stood in 3 rows, and there were 25 of them. Up to 3,000 residents lived in them. They were not luxuries. The smallest apartments were only 24 square meters, and sometimes even 12 family members lived in them. The toilets were outside. Today, beautifully revitalized families still hide apartments, but to a higher standard. Also, the longest spinning mill in the city was dedicated to apartments. But these are already luxury lofts. At the consumers, that is, the former shops, there is the Cat Trail, because in the past cats used to catch shop mice here. Figurines of kittens are to be standing here in a short time. For now, you can hammer into one of the games for the workshop of making mascots from... socks and more. Great. That's number 12. There is also a Tourist Centre with souvenirs, guides and antiques. You can order a guide here, Mrs. Monika Gajek (501-459-305). We highly recommend it!

Karl Scheibler's estate at the time of his death was estimated at 14 million rubles. It was therefore slightly larger than the Jewish king of cotton. On the other hand, he had a more modest palace, at least from the outside. An interesting fact is that to this day all Scheibler's first-born male descendants are given the name Karol.

In Scheibler's palace, a museum was organized telling about the beginnings of native, and not only, cinematography. The use of many optical and film inventions can be checked here, e.g. a photoplasticon from 1900 works here. Among the souvenirs is the original Oscar, won for the film "Ida" directed by Paweł Pawlikowski.

Strolling through subsequent, very interesting exhibitions, you can also admire the magnificent, preserved  interiors of the palace. Particularly noteworthy are the beautiful ceilings and magnificent stoves. The most beautiful I've ever seen! Many of these rooms played in movies. Well, how not to take advantage of such greatness.

Museum Herbst Palace - a branch of the Museum of Art in Łódź

Visiting the MPH, you can see the historic house -  interiors in Herbst's palace and the Old Art Gallery in the former carriage house building.

The interiors of Herbst's palace are a true masterpiece and a wonderful arrangement. The property is not large, but the beautiful interiors deserve your attention. It houses a branch of the Museum of Art, which seems like a perfect idea. The most beautiful is the Hall of Mirrors. Here you can see what a huge splendor the industrialists of the turn of the century lived in.

Edward Herbst initially worked for Karl Scheibler as the director of his factory. He later married his eldest daughter, Matilda, and, together with the cotton king's sons, managed the estate after his death.

It is worth knowing that Edward and Matilda's daughter, Anna Maria, died when she was less than 10 years old. Matilda devoted a lot of her property and time to the operation of hospitals. She founded the first pediatric hospital in Poland, which operates to this day. She received the Golden Cross of Merit for her charity work.

In the Carriage House, in the Old Art Gallery, you will find wonderful paintings, including beautiful, classic works by outstanding painters such as Matejko, Tetmajer or Wierusz-Kowalski. We got to know the figure of the latter better by visiting Suwałki.

Biała Fabryka in Łódź

Ludwik Geyer's White Factory stands next to the famous route of the city. Currently, it is the seat of the Central Museum of Textiles, additionally with a tiny but charming open-air museum. It is a huge museum, which can be visited for up to 4 hours. It accurately depicts the history of the city. The builder of the complex, Geyer, was a pioneer among cotton kings. It was he who built the first factory chimney and installed the first steam machine.

Here you can listen to the roar of the working looms. It's loud! And these are just a few pieces. Up to 300 of them could work in the hall! Interestingly, many of the original machines are still running. Apparently, when Andrzej Wajda showed in the 1970s Of the twentieth century, the film "Promised Land",  telling about the beginnings of the city, world filmmakers wondered how high the budget of the work must have been, since it recreated so many centuries-old machines. The truth was simple and shameful at the same time. They simply started the looms left by the industrialists that were still operating at the plant.

The weavers knew their machines so well that they could easily hear that one of them was working badly. Although they often covered their ears with cotton to save their hearing. I also tried to meet for a while. I weaved 2 millimeters of canvas, and not first class. The museum also shows the final creations, made of materials. The utility ones, which were traded at the fair,  as well as the artistic ones, exhibited in huge, non-company halls.

Exhibitions in small wooden houses in the open-air museum have a completely different overtone. Here it became sentimental when we saw objects remembered from childhood. Each house is a story of a different family, beautiful stories enchanted in wood. Among them there is also a wooden church and a very impressive villa, also wooden.

Orientarium Zoo Łódź - attractions for children in Łódź

The Łódź Zoo is the Municipal Zoological Garden, which attracts visitors with its western level and unusual attraction. And this is due to the unique Orientarium. According to them, it is the most modern animal pavilion in Europe in Southeast Asia. It is warm and colourful all year round, with a lot of biodiversity. The main inhabitants of Orientarium are Indian elephants. Led by an experienced Alexander with one punch. He educates the elephant youth who joined him. Elephants have their own private pool here, and their feeding combined with bathing is the biggest attraction of this place. It attracts eager viewers every day. Elephants can then be seen from different places, from below, from above, and from under the water through a large glass.

An unusual curiosity is also a huge tunnel with sharks, stingrays and many other fish. The first time we were here, the sharks were tiny. Now we admired larger specimens. Soon, the sight of them will freeze the blood in your veins! And then you'll see Sumatran orangutans, Malay bears, and Kraken. It is the largest gavial crocodile in Europe. It is 5 meters long and still growing!

The old part of the building is also interesting. With a unique Asian lion, tigers, koendas or lemurs. Vultures invite you with a very interesting catwalk, and a new, curious toddler appeared among giraffes in January 2024.

The Łódź Zoo is located almost in the city center. You can drive up to the facility by car. The nearest car park, directly under the entrance, is payable. You have to look a little further for the free one. At the entrance you will see a statue of Maurice and Hawranek.

The Fairy Tale Boat Trail is a great attraction for young and old alike. Toddlers simply like to find fairy-tale characters scattered in different parts of the city, while adults look at them with sentimentality, because they remind them of their childhood. The characters from the Trail refer to films made by the Studio of Small Film Forms Se-ma-for

It is worth noting that over 1,400 animated films have been made in Łódź, broadcast in dozens of countries around the world. Each of our peers remembers them well. The most famous figures of the Trail are Teddy Bear, Maurycy and Hawranek or Filemon and Boniface at Scheibler's palace.

EC1 Łódź - attractions for children, teenagers and adults

EC1 is an example of fantastic revitalization. It is a former power plant transformed into a modern facility, offering visitors a planetarium, a science center or comics. It was established in 2018. You'll love this place.

Science and Technology Center

In a modern interior, you will experience knowledge and fun on several floors. Through multimedia games, you will direct the work of a combined heat and power plant that once fulfilled its functions. Mapping on an old turbine will help to understand the operation of this huge machine. You will watch it 15 minutes before each full hour. There is also a spherical cinema, available for a separate ticket. The screenings take place at full hours. There is a cloakroom, a bar and a children's play area.

We liked the Center for Comics and Interactive Narrative the most, although perhaps a better complement would simply be "games". Comics are an extraordinary art of drawing and dynamic storytelling. Colourful exhibitions penetrate this world extremely deeply. The museum will be appreciated not only by the older ones, for whom comics were once as important as today's colorful fantasy series, but also by the younger ones. They will find their paradise mainly in the game zone, where the Witcher, the most popular game in the world, rules. It was produced by Poles, and CD Projekt red studio was initially based in Łódź. The process of creating a game takes several years of hard work. You can learn all these steps here. What's more, you can take part in them by testing mistakes, creating an environment or preparing a narrative and character adventures. The whole is presented in a modern and accessible way. Finally, you can step into a retro-style arcade and play slots or old PCs on your own.

Old Cemetery in Łódź

The Old Cemetery is wonderful. If you like old necropolises, then a walk here will be a deep experience for you. It is worth going here while exploring the city. It is one of the most important and beautiful necropolises of Łódź. It dates back to 1855 and is trireligious, divided into 3 parts: Catholic, Evangelical and the smallest Orthodox. In the cemetery there are mausoleums of Łódź factory owners. The most spectacular is the neo-Gothic mausoleum of Karl Scheibler from 1885-88, in the Evangelical part.

The Catholic part is dominated by the Neo-Renaissance mausoleum of the Heinzl family from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He takes by heart the grave of a small child sleeping on a pillow. You will find them among the children's monuments, at the back of the Scheibler Chapel, in the Evangelical part. The ivy-covered grave of 4-year-old Gustav Pietlich from 1909 was discovered in 2006.

It is also worth visiting another necropolis in Łódź, equally atmospheric and carryinggreat emotional experiences. It is a cemetery, the largest Jewish cemetery in terms of area in Poland and the second largest in Europe. After the Berlin cemetery, about 230,000 people were buried here. Jews, and about 180,000 tombstones have survived to this day. The cemetery dates back to 1892 and is still open. It is surrounded by a high brick wall, and the entrance is located at Zmienna Street.

Behind the wall you will see a thicket of matzevot, arranged in rows and stretching over a huge area. Most of them are modest, with inscriptions in Hebrew. There are also several larger tombs of Łódź industrialists: Jarociński, Hertz or Prussak. The largest definitely outweighs the rest. This is the mausoleum of Izrael Poznański. It dates back to 1903-05 and is said to be the largest Jewish tomb in the world!

Murals in Łódź

The walls of many tenement houses are decorated with beautiful paintings. Did you know that there are already more than 170 of them in the city? And new ones are constantly being created. They are already famous all over Poland. They are painted by well-known street artists from Poland (e.g. Proembrion, M-City, Etam) and abroad (e.g. Osgemeos, Eduardo Kobra or Inti). The murals were created, among others, as part of the Urban Forms Gallery Festival, and previously the International Graffiti Festival. They are scattered all over the city, just stick your head up and you will definitely come across one. It is the largest outdoor city gallery in Poland.

The first contemporary Łódź mural was created in 2001, thanks to the Łódź art group Design Futura. It is located at 152 Piotrkowska Street andwas entered in the Guinness Book of Records. For some time, it was the largest graffiti in the world.

We were captivated by a fairy-tale backyard with a painting of the Birthday of Wojciech Siudmak (4 Więckowskiego Street). The Witcher was also quite impressed. It is strongly connected with the city, because this is where both the author of the hero, Andrzej Sapkowski, and the CD Projekt red studio, which created the game, come from. The painting with Geralt of Rivia at the time of its creation was the largest in Poland and one of the largest in the world. It is over 70 meters high and covers 24 floors of a skyscraper at Piotrkowska 182. It was created by 8 people under the supervision of Jakub Rebelka.

You will find a very interesting and innovative painting on the wall of the Iness hotel. You can animate it with the Artivive app. In the rooms you will find wall murals depicting the most iconic parts of the city. Some of them also animate themselves.

Graffiti enriched with mirrors, bars and other elements is a unique curiosity and an inseparable part of the climate of Łódź, the only such city in Poland!

This park with an extraordinary meaning is located at Wojska Polskiego Street, in the Łódka River valley. These are areas adjacent to the borders of the ghetto during the war. The institution conducts educational and cultural activities, promotes the multicultural heritage of the city, with particular emphasis on Jewish culture. It promotes the idea of tolerance and counteracting manifestations of racism and xenophobia.

Mandoria in Rzgów - family attractions in Łódź and its surroundings

Mandoria is an amusement park for children, opened in July 2021. It's another great family place. It is true that outside Łódź, but quite close, in the Ptak Shopping Center in Rzgów. The whole family will have a fantastic time here, in an amusement park under the roof, with a dozen or so attractions that can also be enjoyed by adults.

Our Amelie was delighted, and so were we. We didn't have to wait under the attractions for our little one, we just played with him. Mandoria is not cheap, but certainly children, especially the younger ones, will have a very good time here. For crazy young people, this place may be too free. There is a lot of gastronomy on site and a large, free parking lot.

Arturówek is located on the northern edge of Łódź, in the Łagiewniki Forest. Fantastic recreational areas await here. They are ideal for walking, sunbathing and active family recreation. Several water reservoirs were ingeniously developed here. A pedal boat and kayak rental was established over one of them. On the other side, there is a sandy beach with an urban swimming pool.

On the opposite shore, which you will reach in just a few minutes, it is also interesting. There is a playground for children and a water playground right next to it. Free and without crowds. Our Amelia was delighted. There are ice cream and coffee booths on site. The whole is surrounded by a forest, you can walk at will, ride a bike or picnic. Soak up nature and get away from the big city that stretches right next door. It is a 15-minute drive from the city center, for example, bus No. 85 takes you here.

It is the chapel of St. Roch and Sebastian from the 18th century and the chapel of St. Anthony from the 17th century, or more precisely from 1676. Interestingly, it is the oldest preserved building in Łódź! Inside the chapel of St. Anthony there is a well with spring water, considered miraculous. The Nagawki open-air museum is a very charming place in the middle of nowhere. With beautiful wooden buildings and access without asphalt. This does not interfere with a beautiful walk around the Open-air museum. I am captivated by such old wooden construction. Map of experiences in Łódź

Below you will find a map of interesting places to visit in Łódź. There are a lot of them. We have also marked monuments from the Fairy Tale Trail as well as restaurants and accommodation recommended by us. Take a look at it and plan your adventure with discovering Łódź. It's definitely worth it!

Film Boat

Did you know that after World War II, there was an idea for Łódź to become the capital of Poland? In the end, she did not receive this title, but it took on a different name - the film capital of Poland. It is here that the popular film school, or more precisely the Leon Schiller State Higher School of Film, Television and Theatre, is located. It was established as the first film school in Poland and educated famous Polish artists and directors, such as Wajda, Polański, Kieślowski and Zanussi.

An interesting feature related to cinema is, of course, the Avenue of Stars of the Łódź Fame Road, located on the main pedestrian route. The Avenue of Stars is modeled on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and brings together brass stars with the names of famous Polish artists associated with cinema: actors, directors and cinematographers. The first one was unveiled by Andrzej Seweryn in 1998. This is the one who played in Andrzej Wajda's "Promised Land".

The Museum of Cinematography is also very interesting, and an interesting Fairy Tale Trail Łódź was created to celebrate Se-ma-for. On the other hand, a very atmospheric Stare Kino hotel was created on Piotrkowska Street, where famous actors look at us from the wallpaper on the walls.

Museums in Łódź

An interesting journey into the past, also the recent one, is invited by fantastic Museums: the Central Museum of Textiles with a small open-air museum, which consists of the Łódź City Culture Park, a small Factory Museum, the Museum of Cinematography in the Scheibler Palace or the Museum of the City of Łódź in the Poznań Palace. The Museum of Art History is located in the Herbst Palace, but it also presents a collection of modern art, because Łódź is an interesting creation that mixes the history of old factories with the present of modern technologies. The Museum is a modern EC1 Centre.

Events in Łódź

But Łódź is also a city of cultural events with an international reputation. Among them, the most interesting are: the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography "Camerimage", the Festival of Mountains, Extreme Sports and Travel "Explorers Festival", the Aleksander Tansman International Competition of Musical Individuality, the Competition for Clothing Designers - "Golden Thread" or the Łódź Ballet Meetings.

Where to eat - restaurants

There are plenty of elegant restaurants, atmospheric eateries and pleasant cafes in the city. Piotrkowska leads the way in this regard. It is definitely worth visiting the delicious Imber Restaurant (No. 43) after Magda Gessler's revolutions. Today, it serves modern Łódź and Jewish cuisine, referring to the history of the city and the tenement house in which it is located. We tasted sheep meatballs and duck breasts here. The dishes were very tasty and beautifully served. However, we were most impressed by the dessert - a parfait with a cotton-like halva. Heaven in your mouth!

On this famous street, we also ate at the Lavash Georgian Restaurant (No. 69). We can also highly recommend it to you. It is tasty and unique, and I know that Georgian flavors are very popular in Poland. You can also eat cheaper, the promenade offers tasty sandwiches and salads.

Cotton in Manufaktura also stands out on the culinary map of Łódź. Take a look and taste the delicious Italian cuisine. We ate a few traps here, they were really fantastic. The atmosphere of the place is also excellent, and in addition it offers its preserves.

Not far from Księże Młyn, in the Park Źródliska, there is acozy café and restaurant with a graceful name Tubajka. Tasty sweets are a specialty, but homemade dinners are also served. Pleasant atmosphere and comfortable armchairs are encouraged. On a winter day, we warmed up with a delicious brew at the T.25 cafe.

Accommodation in Łódź: hotels and glamping

If you are planning a longer stay in Łódź than for 1 day, we recommend some interesting accommodation in the city. In the very center we slept in the Old Cinema hotel. It is a great place, very atmospheric and secluded. Despite the main street, because the hotel is located in the courtyard. Well-equipped rooms, reminiscent of famous films, delicious and varied breakfast, quietly and fantastically, I can wholeheartedly recommend.

We also had the pleasure of sleeping at the Iness Hotel, spending a nice weekend in Łódź. It is located at Wróblewskiego Street and attracts with an unusual wall painting. You can animate it with the Artivive app. In its rooms you will find wall murals depicting the most iconic parts of the city. Some of them also animate themselves. A unique curiosity. We had the Rose Passage. In addition, the hotel offers a fantastic breakfast, and coffee, tea and hot chocolate throughout the day.

A completely different but also unique place is the Glamping Cascade. Perfect for you if you want to go on adventures in nature! They are tents in a very comfortable form. This is how glamping is described - as a luxury camping. There are only a few tents, in a huge area, among paddocks with horses. That's why you feel familiar and private. There is a private jacuzzi under the roof, own barbecue, kitchenette and bathroom. From the bed we looked at a herd of horses with small foals. In addition, there is an imaginative wooden playground and a beach by the pond - a fairy tale place. Perfect for slow travel.

History of Lodz

Although few people know about it, the roots of the centre probably date back to the 12th century, and the first documented mention of the settlement dates back to 1332. Łódź received city rights, because that was the name of this medieval agricultural settlement, as early as in the 15th century. For most, however, the city is associated mainly with 19th-century industry. It was then that its intensive development took place and numerous textile factories and residences of powerful entrepreneurs were established.

And rightly so. From the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, for about 400 years, practically nothing happened here. The career of the center began only in 1820, when it was decided to allocate the area to the weaving and textile center of the then Kingdom of Poland. The development took an avalanche. Just cite a few numbers about the number of inhabitants of the city:

  • 1820: 767 inhabitants
  • 1865: 40,000 inhabitants
  • 1902: 300,000 inhabitants
  • 1914: 477,000 inhabitants

During this spectacular growth, the city remained under Russian rule. However, the tycoons were primarily Germans and Jews. Poles played a smaller role. None of our compatriots made a fabulous fortune. Along with newcomers from various parts of Europe, the richness of cultures and religions also flourished. This can be seen in the multi-denominational Old Cemetery and cemetery.

 Access to the city

How to get to the city by car, train and bus:

  • By car: the city located centrally in Poland has one of the best locations. In terms of access, the city is practically unmatched. The A1 and A2 motorways and the S8 expressway run nearby. Unfortunately, the congestion in the city itself makes it worth thinking about other means of transport.
  • By train: the city has direct train connections with many cities, e.g. Warsaw (the journey takes only 1.5 hours), Krakow, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk or Szczecin. There are several train stations in the city. The largest of them is Łódź Fabryczna in the city center.
  • By bus: by this means of transport you can also get directly from several cities, including Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Lublin, Toruń or also from Bydgoszcz. They stop at Łódź Fabryczna and Kaliska stations.
