Liberec in the Czech Republic – attractions of the mountain capital of the region

If you are looking for an idea for a weekend in the Czech Republic near the Polish border, Liberec will be a great choice. This is one of those places that can surprise you on your first visit. Historic center, beautiful town hall, atmospheric streets and interesting museums, and around the mountains, lookout towers, ski slopes and plenty of attractions for families. It is only 40 kilometers from Poland and the border crossing in Jakuszyce. The town is dominated by the characteristic Ještěd, and in its surroundings there are the Jizera Mountains, the Giant Mountains and the extremely picturesque areas of the Bohemian Paradise.
It is also a city with a very interesting history. For centuries, Czech and German influences mixed here, and Liberec was one of the most important centers of the cloth industry in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. To this day, this can be seen in the architecture, historic villas and former factories. Liberec can be visited all year round. In summer, hiking and sightseeing tours are great, in winter, skiing reigns supreme, and in the rain, you can hide in museums, an aquapark or a science center. Check out our guide to Liberec to plan your weekend well.

Liberec - location, parking and access
Liberec is located in the north of the Czech Republic, about 40 km from the border with Poland and near the border with Germany. The town is located at the foot of the Ještěd Ridge, between the Jizera Mountains and Ještěd. For tourists from Poland, it is one of the most easily accessible Czech mountain towns. You can get here really quickly from Lower Silesia, and thanks to that Liberec is great for a day trip, a weekend or even a longer stay. The car is the most convenient means of transport, especially if you plan to combine sightseeing with a trip to Ještěd or the Jizera Mountains. In the center and in its vicinity you will find paid parking lots, but it is worth remembering that in the tourist season and on weekends the most popular places can fill up quickly. The city also has well-developed public transport. Buses and trams operate here. Tickets can be purchased on the bus by paying with a card.

Things to do in Liberec What to see in Liberec
The biggest attraction of Liberec is, of course, Ještěd, but it is definitely worth adding sightseeing in the city and nearby attractions. The center itself hides several unique monuments, and in a short distance from the city you will find other interesting places. It is worth spending at least one full day to visit the most important attractions of Liberec. If you also want to climb Ještěd, visit the zoo and botanical garden and take advantage of the attractions of the Babylon Center, it is best to plan the whole weekend here. And this is just an introduction to the riches of the area and the region. Here are the best attractions of Liberec that are worth seeing in the city and its surroundings!
Ještěd - the symbol of Liberec
Ještěd is the symbol of Liberec. It is 1012 m above sea level and offers unparalleled views without an observation tower. It is the highest peak of the Jesztiedzki Ridge. On the asphalt road leading to the top, you will find several parking lots. The last one for adventurous tourists is Ještědka. It costs 200 crowns for the whole day, it is not for hours and cash is required. You can still go to the hotel itself, but only with permission. From Jestedka it is about 700 meters on foot, about 15 minutes of trekking. Ještěd is not only a symbol of Liberec, visible really from a distance and shining in the sun. It is also a winter mecca for athletes. On its slopes there is a modern ski resort, and under the very top there are jumps on which the best riders in the world competed.
The summit is very outstanding, which is why it offers extremely wide horizons and is easily recognizable. This is thanks to the famous hat. A unique, futuristic building in the shape of a hat, created in 1963−73. How did this happen? When a hotel burned down here in the 20th century, a competition for a new complex was announced. It was actually supposed to be two buildings, a TV transmitter and a new hotel. The brave architect created such a futuristic work that covered both functions at the same time. And so this amazing place became an icon of Czech architecture of the 20th century. Hubáček received the prestigious August Perret Award of the International Union of Architects in 1969 for the project, and in 2000 it was recognized as the Building of the Century of the Czech Republic. Inside, there is a hotel and a restaurant, and a special vibration-damping pendulum is placed at the top of the tower. When a strong wind swings the structure, its movement helps to limit the lateral sway of the structure. A metallic figure of the Child from Mars also stood in front of the building. This is the work of Jaroslav Róna, who also left his artistic traces in Liberec.
Jested can be reached on foot by several trails. The most obvious approach leads from the upper station of the cable car, but it is also worth considering the entrance from the Vypřež area. The hike itself is not very long, and the prize is views of Liberec, the Jizera Mountains and, in good weather, even remote mountain ranges.

Cable car to Ještěd
One of the biggest attractions of Ještěd is also the cable car. However, it is worth checking its current functioning before leaving, because the railway infrastructure is being modernized and availability may change. If the cable car works, the entrance allows you to quickly get to the summit area and is a great option for people traveling with children or for those who want to spend more time visiting Liberec itself.

Market Square in Liberec - Ratusz - Liberec City Hall
The market in Liberec is very pleasant. It is dominated by a powerful town hall from 1893 - a pearl of Neo-Renaissance architecture. It was designed by the Viennese architect Franz Neumann. The building was built at a time when Liberec was a significant city of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and a center of textile industry and trade. Hence the monumental façade inspired by theViennaCity Hall to match the capital. The interiors are beautiful, you can visit them with a guide, on designated days and times. To do this, go to the Tourist Information located across the street.
Unless you are planning a wedding, then you will get to the town hall outside the designated hours. It is worth looking at the tallest tower, which is 65 meters high. A knight proudly flexes on her spire. Interestingly, it was removed by the communist authorities and replaced with a red star. He returned, albeit as a copy, only in 2005, after a brief episode of the Czech lion at the top. The original sculpture of the knight Roland can be seen in the museum.
The square in front of the town hall, Dr. E. Beneše Square, is a good starting point for exploring the city. It is worth stopping here for a moment, taking photos and continuing on foot towards the historic center. Right next to the town hall there is another characteristic element of the urban space – the Neptune fountain. This is a good example of the fact that in Liberec even an ordinary walk around the center can turn into a search for interesting details. It is also worth taking a stroll through the streets surrounding the main square. There are representative tenement houses, restaurants, cafes and shops, and a bit further you can see the historic bourgeois buildings.

Waldsztejn Cottages - Waldštejn Cottages
Waldstein Cottages are a wonderful, valuable heritage of the city. Liberec was once famous as an important center of dressmaking, there were many dressmakers and such houses. These three miraculously survived and are a treasure of the historical part of the city. They come from the 17th century, or more precisely from 1678-81. The oldest of the three houses in 1801 became an inn called "Near the city of St. Petersburg" ("Under the city of St. Petersburg"). Their name comes from Albrecht of Wallenstein – in honor of the former owner Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Czech commander and prince of Friedland, who founded the New Town with today's Náměstí Sokolovské square.
In the 19th century, the development of textile industry brought enormous wealth to local entrepreneurs. Representative tenement houses, villas and entire industrial complexes were built. Thanks to this, a walk around Liberec is a bit like a journey through the history of architecture – from small craft houses to impressive residences of manufacturers.

Museum of North Bohemia - North Bohemian Museum
The Museum of Northern Bohemia is a bit outside the center, but it is definitely worth visiting this amazing facility, one of the largest in the Czech Republic. It is housed in a neo-Renaissance building from 1898. She herself makes quite an impression. Interestingly, it is guarded by lions who came on pedestals after 122 years. This is the work of Jaroslav Róna. The museum presents archaeology, history, crafts and nature. Best of all, it's free. The largest hall presents mock-ups of the surrounding castles in their original shape. The following rooms show a fraction of all the collections, because the number of exhibits is estimated at several hundred thousand. Among them you will find the original sculpture of the knight Roland, which once decorated the town hall spire or the 16th-century tapestry with the coat of arms of Liberec. Apparently, it is the oldest such preserved in Central Europe. The exhibition of Czech keyboard instruments is unusual.

Łaźnia - Liberec Regional Gallery and Lázně Café
The baths are located opposite the Museum. It is also a neo-Renaissance gem from 1902. Unfortunately, the interiors are currently under renovation and only a café is available. Its entrance is guarded by another sculpture by Jaroslav Róna. The building was built on the occasion of the jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Initially, it served as a swimming pool, now it houses the Liberec Regional Gallery.

Uczta Olbrzymów Černego - Hostina obrů - Bus stop
The Giant's Feast is a symbolic sculpture by Černý in Liberec. You can sit here, wait for the bus, because it is also a bus stop, but how unusual. This table, left after the Feast of Giants, depicts the heavy footprints left by the brutal history of these lands. The objects lying on the table, constituting the roof of the bus stop, refer to the multicultural past of the region, which for centuries was the arena of conflicts between the Czech Republic and other nations.

Botanical Garden and Liberec ZOO – the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic
Liberec also boasts a unique zoo. It is a great attraction for families with children, but also for adults who like to watch animals in more natural conditions. You will feel a bit like on holiday at your grandmother's. The zoo is small and the oldest in the Czech Republic, so you may think that it will not meet modern needs, but these are unnecessary concerns. It is located in a green, forested part of the city, thanks to which the walk has an interesting character, and the animals are well cared for, cared for and enjoy the company of man. You will see rare species of animals here, and white tigers attract special attention. Additional attractions include feeding animals, such as sea lions and penguins, and training elephants. It is worth booking a few hours for the visit.
Right next to THE ZOO there is another green attraction of the city – the Botanical Garden. It is a place especially worth visiting out of the summer season, because many exhibitions are under glass. The complex consists of numerous pavilions where you can see plants from different parts of the world. Tropical vegetation, cacti, orchids or aquatic plants create an interesting variety from the mountain landscapes that dominate around Liberec.

Red Palace - Liberec Castle
Liberec Castle, or the red palace, dominates in the center of Liberec, near the main artery. Its rich history dates back to the 16th century. In 1583, brothers Kryštof and Melchior of Redern transformed the seat into a Renaissance castle. After the fire of 1615, the building was rebuilt, and at the end of the 18th century the Clam-Gallas family gave it today's classicist character. The most valuable interior is the Renaissance chapel from 1606, founded by Catherine of Redern. Currently, the palace is inaccessible, but work is underway to invite tourists here.

Centrum Babylon Liberec – a family all-weather attraction. iQLANDIA, Aquapark and Lunapark
Centrum Babylon is a place worth having on your list, especially when you travel with children or get rainy weather. It's a huge entertainment complex where you can spend practically all day. The biggest attraction is the Aquapark, but there is also a science center, an indoor amusement park, attractions for children, as well as a hotel space and restaurants. If you are traveling with children, be sure to consider visiting IQLANDIA, in a separate building. It is a modern science centre where, instead of looking at the exhibits behind the glass, you can experiment, check and experience for yourself. The exhibitions deal with physics, technology, man, space and phenomena occurring in nature. This experience is interesting for both children and adults (currently under renovation, 2026). IQPARK, aimed at younger children, also operates in the Babylon Centre building.

What to see near Liberec?
Liberec is a great starting point. If you are staying here for a few days, it is worth allocating time to the surroundings of the city, because they hide interesting places with views.
Jizera Mountains - Špičák and Little Myeloma
The Jizera Mountains start practically on the threshold of Liberec. This is one of the best destinations for people who like quiet mountain hikes and viewpoints. It is worth visiting, for example, Špičák Tanvaldský - Tanwald Myeloma, or Jizera Myeloma. It is 812 meters above sea level. You can get on it by cable car, which we have done. At the top there is a stone observation tower from the beginning of the 20th century, which was built in honor of the emperor. It is 18 meters high and the terrace is 14 meters high and offers a panoramic view of Liberec and the Giant Mountains. You can also eat in the tower. At the top of Szpiczak there is a playground, mountain bike trails, ski trails and rocks on which you can climb with the Fanterova skála viewpoint.
After another viewing platform, you have to descend about 130 meters lower to Mały Szpychak, a 2-kilometer route through a pleasant, somewhat mysterious forest with rocks in these circumstances. A beautiful construction awaits here, completely unique, covered with foil, you can also look at it. It was created for a reason. In 1910, at about the same time as the stone tower in Szpiczak, a toboggan run was created here. This place was famous for this sport and in memory of this history, a construction was created that is supposed to resemble a bobsled.

Bohemian Paradise - Rock town of Hruboskalsko with castles Hrubá Skála and Valdštejn
In the vicinity of Liberec, I definitely recommend visiting the Bohemian Paradise and the rock town of Hruboskalsko. The hike through one of the most famous sandstone rock towns of the Bohemian Paradise was fantastic. The 8 km long route leads between the rock towers and through several spectacular viewpoints. We started our trekking at Hruba Skála Castle. There is a paid car park here, and visiting the castle is also paid, but cheap. The building is beautiful, with wonderful views, and you can also use the toilet here. The rock city itself is free of charge. The rock labyrinth creates a landscape composed of more than 400 sandstone towers and spires that rise up to 60 meters. Formed as a result of soft sandstone erosion. After about 5 km, the loop encounters the Valdštejn Castle - the oldest castle of the Bohemian Paradise. Then 3 km through 2 stunning viewpoints and back to the parking lot.

Glassworks Pačinek Glass
Pačinek Glass is located in Crystal Valley, where glass has been handmade for 300 years. It is one of the most famous modern glassworks in this region. The glass master Jiří Pačinek founded it and together with his family they produce glass works by hand. Stoves heated to 1200 degrees Celsius allow you to form works of art for only a few minutes. The steelworks and the gallery can be visited with a guide. These wonders are sent to Hollywood, the Vatican and various art galleries. In addition, all this is accompanied by a stunning glass garden. Colorful glass flowers have been added to the natural vegetation, which looks simply wonderful and fabulous. The sun shone there and we could not enjoy our eyes. A temple grows next door, which the artist decorated with glass. At certain times, you can visit it with a guide who tells you about the created works. One of them - a crystal reliquary - went to the Vatican as a gift for Pope Francis. Pačinek Glass impressed us much more than we expected – we have never seen such an attraction before.

Sladovna i Pivovar Cvikov restaurant

It is worth visiting the Sladovna Restaurant nearby. Here, brewing traditions date back to the 16th century, and this complex dates back to the end of the 19th century. We tasted the specialties of the restaurant - duck legs with dumplings and roulade wrapped with duck liver. As befits a brewery, they also serve a golden liquor here, of course.

Where to sleep and eat? Accommodation in Liberec
Centrum Babylon - a huge hotel with a beautiful courtyard and many attractions, where we had the pleasure of sleeping. It is a fantastic family complex that combines the functions of a science, entertainment, indoor amusement park and an amazing Aquapark. We have not seen a more beautiful one, and in addition, lasers and an impressive light spectacle are fired at the designated hours. All these experiences are included in the price of accommodation when you buy the right package. The centre of Babylon also houses several restaurants.
Apart from Babylon, you will find a lot of apartments, guest houses and hotels in Liberec. If the most important thing for you is to visit the center, it is worth looking for accommodation near the market square and the Old Town. However, if you plan primarily mountains and Ještěd, accommodation closer to the southern outskirts of the city may be a good choice. It is also worth remembering that Liberec is a popular weekend destination. During winter breaks, summer weekends, and larger events, prices and availability can change significantly, so it's best to book early.

Here you will find a wide selection of accommodations. By booking your stay on Booking.com through our link, you support the development of our blog — and we thank you in advance! It helps us reach many interesting places that we later love to show you and share our experiences and information with you.
How much time to spend on Liberec?
It takes about half a day to walk around the center of Liberec, but if you want to see the most important monuments from the outside, you also want to feel the atmosphere of the city and visit several museums, ZOO or iQLANDIA, it is better to plan the whole day. It is also worth adding some time for the area. Here's a proposal for plans:
- Day 1: city center, town hall, Waldstein Cottages, Giant's Feast, Museum of Northern Bohemia and evening at the Babylon Center
- Day 2: Ještěd and ZOO or Botanical Garden
- Day 3: Hruboskalsko Rock Town or Myeloma and Pačinek Glassworks depending on your preferences

Liberec – is it worth it?
Definitely yes! Liberec is one of those Czech cities that perfectly combines sightseeing with active recreation. You can conquer Ještěd in the morning, then walk around the historic center, and relax in the Aquapark in the evening. Its great advantage is its location - the proximity of the mountains and Poland means that you do not have to plan a long holiday to really relax in the city and experience activities in the bosom of nature. A weekend is enough, and if you have more time, Liberec is the perfect base to explore the entire region – the Jizera Mountains, the Giant Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. We spent 4 days here and it was a great trip.
