The Kościuszko Mound is the most popular of the five mounds in Krakow. It is located on the St. Bronisława Hill in the western part of Krakow, in the Zwierzyniec district. At its feet are the remains of fortifications from the period of Austrian rule, when Krakow served as a fortress. The peak, on the other hand, is a great vantage point for the city and the Beskid peaks on the opposite side.

History of Kościuszko Mound

The Kościuszko Mound was built in honor of Tadeusz Kościuszko. Immediately after his death and burial in Krakow in 1817, the cult of this hero began in Krakow, and the erection of the mound began on October 16, 1820, and ended on October 25, 1823. The mound is 34 m high and in 2017 the Kościuszko Mound, together with the chapel of St. Bronisława and the fort, was established as a Historic Monument.

In 1850, the mound was taken over by the military authorities, who built the "Kościuszko" citadel fort here, but agreed to allow the population access to the mound from sunrise to sunset. Today, the Mound is also available at similar hours, for a fee, as part of the Kościuszko Museum.

Visiting the Kościuszko Mound in Krakow

Free parking is available on site, and as part of the ticket to the Museum, you can climb to the top of the cone and visit the interesting permanent exhibition "Kosciuszko - a hero still needed". It is a multimedia and interactive story about international authority that even children like. This steadfast soldier had to experience the personal drama of unfulfilled youthful love in his life. And although he treated women exceptionally, with unpopular respect at that time, he preferred service to the nation over private happiness. The exhibition also talks about a trip to America and the war for independence there, where he became a mature and recognizable person. Finally, we come to the Kościuszko Uprising and the oath on the Krakow market on March 24, 1794.

Views similar to the mound from the observation deck of the Panorama Cafe opposite the hill are free of charge. You can also dine at the Pod Kopcem Restaurant. Radio RMF FM has been based in the mound buildings for years.
