Attractions in Grudziądz - places worth seeing

There is no shortage of monuments and attractions in Grudziądz. The old town is very charming and every step hides an interesting building. Granary Street is a climatic alley of the city, but it is also worth walking along the Vistula promenade, on the other side of grain warehouses. There are also picturesque cycling routes, a lake and a marina. Check out the most beautiful attractions in Grudziądz!

Granaries in Grudziądz

The Granary on the Vistula is the most recognizable symbol of Grudziądz. A monumental series of brick granaries, erected since the 14th century, creates one of the most beautiful panoramas in Poland on the escarpment. These medieval warehouse buildings testify to the former role of Grudziądz as an important commercial port on the Vistula. They are distinguished by their solid construction and are a monument to the history of Poland.

From the Old Town side, the granaries in Grudziądz have only two storeys, from the river side even six. These are powerful grain warehouses, extremely important in the old days, but their massive buttresses also testify to the defensive functions they performed. In the evening, thanks to the illumination, they look even more picturesque. It's really worth seeing!

The Water Gate is the only preserved of the four city gates from the 14th century in Grudziądz. Its brick, gothic walls harmoniously fit into the panorama of the granaries. It was here that goods transported by the Vistula River, the former "commercial highway" of Europe, were brought. It is a valuable element of the medieval city walls.

Flis Vistula Trade Museum in Grudziądz

Grudziądz, Brama Wodna

One of the granaries houses the Flis Vistula Trade Museum, a branch in Grudziądz. It is a modern, multimedia museum that tells a fascinating story of grain trade and life on the Vistula River. It is a place where you can feel the spirit of old times and find out how important grain, an ancient treasure, was for the development of the city.

From the city side, a climatic promenade was led along these grain warehouses. Particularly charming in the vicinity of Reja Street, where you can relax in the Fado cafe. Above  stands the statue of Uhlana with a maiden with a perverse inscription: "Because the heart of Uhlana, when you put it on your hand, in the first place the maiden, in front of her only the horse." But the horse is not on the monument, and the girl caught on.

Grudziądz St. Nicholas Church

St. Nicholas Basilica is the oldest church in the city. Its construction began in 1286. The gothic shape and baroque interiors with an 18th-century altar will delight every lover of sacred architecture. At the entrance, a gothic, thirteenth-century baptismal font attracts attention. He stands at the statue of Uhlana and next to him he can go down the stairs to the other side of the warehouses.

Vistula walking route

The Vistula walking trail stretching on the other side of the granaries, from the side of the Vistula, is an extremely scenic place. Beautifully developed and ending at the Grudziądz stronghold.

Klimek Tower and the remains of the Teutonic castle in Grudziądz

Grudziądz

On the hill above the town, the ruins of the Teutonic castle from the 13th century have been preserved. In 2014, the entire area with the remains of the castle was nicely revitalized and interestingly developed for residents and tourists, with a viewing platform and a café with a panorama of the Vistula River, the city and wonderful sunsets. The rebuilt Klimek tower today serves as an additional lookout point. What's valuable, free admission. The panorama of Grudziądz and the Vistula valley from this place is breathtaking.

Old Town and Market Square in Grudziądz

The Grudziądz market square is decorated with historic tenement houses, including the oldest "Pod Swan" from the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. There is also a bench with Copernicus on the market square, and a tram runs through the square.

Monument and mural with Nicolaus Copernicus

Copernicus is very popular in these areas, but in this city we draw a bit in a different light. Not as an astronomer, but as a financier, an economist. Because it was here that he delivered his treatise on the coin. In addition to the bench on the market square, you will find a large monument just behind the market square, which looks at the mural with this Renaissance man.

In summer, visit the city's sandy beach at Lake Rudnickie Wielkie. It's the perfect place to relax. Here you will find a guarded swimming pool, a sandy beach, water equipment rental, playgrounds, jetties and the possibility of organizing bonfires. A city bus goes to the beach, and the entire infrastructure is adapted to the needs of families with children and people with disabilities.

Active holidays: marina, hiking and cycling trails

For lovers of active leisure, Grudziądz has prepared several hiking trails, bicycle routes and the possibility of sightseeing flights by motorbike or plane. At Portowa Street, near Brzeźna, there is also a marina with bicycle rental and the possibility of going out on the river.

Accommodation in Grudziądz. Where to sleep and where to eat?

I have already mentioned the unusual and very atmospheric Fado Cafe. It is located at the granaries, on Reja Street and is the most amazing, colorful corner of the city. With lots of flowers, ornaments and lights. You will drink tasty coffee and tea here, but you will also eat tasty desserts, including the best meringue in the city. Above the cafe, there is the fantastic Stary Spichlerz apartment. The place is amazing, we had the pleasure of sleeping here and I highly recommend it. The entire apartment, with its bathroom and kitchen, is spacious, very comfortable, well-equipped and impressively arranged.

Our video

We have created a film presenting the 5 most beautiful, in our opinion, cities of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Grudziądz is also included in the list. We invite you!

A Short History of Grudziądz

The history of Grudziądz dates back to the times of the first Piasts and missionary activity in Prussia, as the owner of Grudziądz and the entire Chełmno Land was then the missionary bishop Christian. Already in the 10th century, there was a fortified stronghold here, and the first mentions of it come from 1065. In the 13th century, the city came under the rule of the Teutonic Knights, who granted it city rights in 1291. Grudziądz quickly developed as an important center of grain trade, which ensured its wealth and importance on the map of Poland. The merchants of Grudziądz bought them and stored them in the granaries of Grudziądz, which belonged to the merchants. It was stored in bulk, scattered and not on the entire floor, so that during the winter it could be shifted from one part to another, so that the grains were constantly in motion. After the thaws in April, when the rafting season began, the granaries could be emptied and the grain could be sold at a good price to the seaport in Gdańsk. A very simple force, i.e. gravity, was used. Grain was dropped from one floor to the lowest through the windows, or the floor structure was dismantled. Inside, there were funnels connected to drainage chutes and the grain was also dropped on the Vistula bank by the force of gravity, very simply and quickly.

For centuries, the city has witnessed many historical events, and its monuments are a living testimony to the turbulent past. Today, Grudziądz is a city full of charm, history and unusual views. It provides peace, no crowds and an authentic atmosphere. It is the perfect destination for a weekend getaway, both for history lovers and those looking for relaxation by the water. If you don't know Grudziądz yet, be sure to put it on your list of places to visit. Grudziądz, after years of our absence, surprised us very positively. It is not big, definitely quiet and without crowds. It enchants and continues to flourish. In the vicinity you will see other magnificent castles of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie constellation, such as Toruń, Chełmno or Bydgoszcz.
