Gozo attractions. What to see on Gozo, the natural island of Malta

Gozo is Malta's second largest island. It is a very beautiful and much wilder island than Malta. There are much fewer cities on the whole island, but you can see many more virgin corners. We'll tell you what to visit. Getting to know Gozo in one day can be successful, but it's worth taking the ferry early in the morning, preferably around 8.00 am, and planning the whole day here until sunset. Ferries, both car and passenger, run throughout the day and even at night.

Gozo attractions, or what to see on the island of Gozo?
The island is famous mainly for its natural attractions. The journey here is communing with wonderful landscapes, with the sea in the background, because almost everywhere on the island you can see water. The picturesque landscape of Gozo consists of cliffs, azure lagoons, towns with sand-coloured buildings, and everything blends beautifully with the blue of the water. Even from the citadel in the capital, you can easily see the shore and the blue surface of the sea. Discover interesting places and the best attractions of Gozo!

Al-Mixta Cave and Ramla Bay, the most beautiful attractions of Gozo
In the northeastern part of Gozo, you can find an insane uniqueness. It is the grotto of Al-Mixta, a rock niche with a wonderful view in the background. This place probably made the biggest impression on us on the whole island. I think it is definitely one of the most beautiful places in Gozo. Perhaps this is partly due to the fact that it was the first attraction we visited in Gozo. It's a really small cave, but the view from it is stunning. Like taken out of some image that seems to be a creation of imagination, not a real sight.
The mere approach to it, because you have to leave the car about 500 meters earlier, makes a big impression. The view opens onto Ramla Bay with a sandy beach. Remarkable, as an additional frame created by the rocks, it can enhance the impression of beauty.
From the cave you can go down to Ramla beach - Ramla Bay or Ramla il-Hamra. It is the most beautiful and largest sandy beach in Gozo, with orange sand, like many other beaches in Malta and Gozo. This golden color makes a colossal impression, especially when combined with water azure. Although compared to the Baltic beaches in Poland, those in Malta and Gozo are tiny!
Practical information: free entrance, free parking, but you have to walk a few hundred meters (this is a private area, you can throw money into the prepared piggy bank). The descent to the beach from the cave is quite steep, I recommend it only if you have comfortable, fastened shoes.

Dwejra Bay - Azure Window to Gozo
Until a few years ago, there was a rock arch available here, the so-called Azure Window, majestically thrown over the surface of the water. It was a symbol of Gozo and all of Malta! Unfortunately, it collapsed, but it is still very picturesque here. This place has its magic and today Dwejra Bay still attracts tourists thanks to other natural attractions, such as Fungus Rock or Blue Hole.
Here, on this magnificent coast, you can follow in the footsteps of Jason Momoa, because here Daenerys and Khal Drogo had their wedding. Anyone who has watched Game of Thrones knows what this is all about. You have to tread carefully, the terrain is uneven, full of holes and depressions in the rocks, and they are often filled with water. But the views are breathtaking, especially at sunset! This place captures the atmosphere of Gozo well!
Practical information: Free entrance, free parking on site

Window Wied il-Mielah in Gozo
We have another window to admire, in the northern part of the island. It's not as picturesque as the Azure Window was, but it's still going on. It is best to admire them from the rocks opposite, you can go down the stairs, but when we were there, this descent was closed with a gate. In the vicinity of the arch, I also recommend taking a look at the cliffs, because they create an extremely picturesque picture! It is worth taking a look.
Practical information: Free entrance, free parking on site
You can reach the Triq Ta'Wied Il-Mielah by asphalt almost to the very window, along the route from the south. We were coming back like this, and we were going to the window from the other side, from the east, along a route without asphalt, Cliff edged road. It is passable, but you have to drive slowly.

Ta’?urdan Lighthouse in Gozo
The Ta’?urdan lighthouse is visible on the way to the window of Wied il-Mielah. It stands on a hill above the village of Għasri, at an altitude of about 160 m above sea level. You will not reach it, but it is worth climbing here on foot for beautiful panoramas, because it is a convenient vantage point. The building was built in the mid-nineteenth century by the British.

Cliffs of Sanap and X-lendi in Gozo
Sanap Cliffs are considered to be the most beautiful cliffs in all of Malta. They fall vertically into the sea in the south of the island of Gozo and shine white in the sun. It's the perfect place for a sunset, when the rocks gild and almost burn in the glow of a falling ball. They stretch over a long distance, you can see them in several places and have a nice trekking here.
We admired the cliffs in Xlendi. We spent a wonderful sunset here, although we barely managed to catch it, after the azure window, where we were a little too long. That's how it is in great places. X-lendi offers a cool view of the mighty cliffs. We parked on the road in front of the building (on white signs allowing free parking), almost at the cliffs, over a beautiful bay (Kantra Valley). Here, on the benches, you can admire the sunset.
However, we took a quick step to the left, to the trekking path. We crossed the small but charming stone bridge Xlendi Bridge, and further up the hill we climbed the cliffs to admire the wider views. I recommend this place to you, it is quiet, there were single people outside of us, at the time of hiding the sun in the sea, we had this whole landscape to ourselves! It also includes a view of salt pans.
Practical information: free entrance, free parking by the road (in place of white lines)

Victoria (Rabat) - the capital of Gozo
Did you know that you will also find the town of Rabat in Gozo? By way of distinction, in Gozo, the town of Rabat also bears the name Victoria, which it received for the golden jubilee of the reign of Queen Victoria. It is the main city of the island, worth your attention mainly because of the citadel. The high walls guarantee great vantage points almost over the entire island, to all parts of the world.
The heart of this place is a powerful cathedral. The basilica dominates the hill. Before her, the Polish accent, that is, the monument of St. John Paul II, which was in Malta on 2 pilgrimages, and a total of 3 times. On September 1, 1990, he landed unplanned at the Maltese airport when returning from Africa, the plane had a failure. You will also find interesting museums telling the history of the area.
Walking down the charming streets of this city, it is impossible not to notice that it is patronized by St. George. Here you will find many references to this Saint.
Practical information: there is a paid car park at the Citadel, you can eat downtown, preferably in the vicinity of Pjazz Indipendenza. We ate at Bellusa Cafe, but cafes, fast food and restaurants in this area are really a lot cheaper and more expensive.

Megality Ggantija on Gozo
In Malta, you will find many ancient sites and ancient traces of man. Gantiya are the oldest of them and very well preserved. These are megalithic temples, rising in the central part of the island. They are really fascinating, because they are older than the pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge in Great Britain. They date back to 3600-3200 BC. They are located in the heart of the island of Gozo, near Victoria.
It is a complex of two temples, probably related to the cult of fertility. It is estimated that some of the limestone blocks that make them up weigh up to 60 tons. Hence the legends that temples are the work of giants. Before entering the area of the temples, you walk through a small museum, where interesting artifacts found here have been collected. Here you will learn about the history of this fascinating place. Of course, up to certain limits, because many facts hide the darkness of mystery. The place makes us realize how little we still know about the beginnings of humanity and how much potential lies dormant in people, since over 5000 years ago they could create such incredible objects and buildings.
Practical information: Tickets to Ggantija Megaliths cost 10 euros per person
Ta’ Kola windmill in Gozo

This interesting stone windmill stands a few hundred meters from the entrance to Ggantija. It is one of the few such well-preserved windmills in Malta and Gozo. Its construction was managed by the Master of the Order of Malta himself, in the 18th century. Currently, Ta’ Kola Windmill operates as a small museum run by Heritage Malta.

- Xwejni, Salt Pans - salt pans are often found in Gozo, because salt is still traditionally extracted here, but in the north, near Marsalforn, there are most of them
Map of Gozo and Malta attractions
We've highlighted all the experiences we've visited on the map below to make it easier for you to find them and plan your trip to Malta. Don't miss them when exploring Gozo and Malta.
How to get to Gozo from Malta?
Passenger and car ferries sail to Gozo from Malta. They depart from the village of Đirkewwa and arrive at the port of Mgarr on Gozo. While sailing, you can admire the beautiful views of Gozo. Ferries run every day, 24 hours a day. During the day, they run often, even every 30 minutes, and the entire crossing takes less than half an hour. The car ferry cost us 20.35 euros, for a car + 2 people. It's a round-trip ticket, payable only on the way back from Gozo. It is definitely worth going to this island by car, because public transport is a bit less developed here than in Malta. This way you will get to the island's attractions faster and easier and you will have time to see more.
It is best to get to Cirkewwa on the ferry around 8.00 in the morning to avoid a long queue. We were there after 9.00 and waited about 1 hour until we entered the ferry by car. During the cruise, the car should be lowered and boarded. There are toilets and a shop on the ferry. Catamarans sail from Valetta to Gozo, from the same marina as the gondolas to the Tri-City.
