It is from its patroness - the Blessed Virgin Mary, that the name Frauenburg (Castle of the Lady) comes - polished as Frombork. The interiors are available for a fee. Water Tower in Frombork

Frombork

The Water Tower rises at the foot of the Cathedral Hill. It is an integral part of the so-called Copernicus Canal, built during the Teutonic Order, at the end of the fourteenth century. It was about 6 km long and brought fresh water from the Bauda River to Frombork. It continued to flow into the waters of the Vistula Lagoon, in the port of Frombork.

A water mill once stood here, and a bricklayer named Stanisław built the tower. In the years 1571-72, the building was equipped with a specially designed bucket mechanism. Thanks to this, the water from the canal was lifted to a height of about 25 m and from here, thanks to the pressure difference and the use of the principle of connected vessels, it was brought to the Frombork hill and even further away.

An interesting fact is that this water supply system was the first in Poland and the second, after the Bavarian Augsburg of 1548, in all of Europe! The creator of the Frombork water supply machinery was the Wrocław rurmist Valentin Hendel - the great-grandfather of the Baroque composer, Jerzy Fryderyk Handel. Today, we can listen to his music here, admiring the panorama of Frombork from the tower, available behind the tickets. The tower also houses the Cafe Galeria.

Gothic building from the 14th century. In the following centuries, it was destroyed, but then rebuilt. It did not erase its original form. The brick church was built on a rectangular plan as a three-nave hall church, without a separate presbytery. Today it does not have a sacred function.

Where to eat and sleep in Frombork

We did not stay in Frombork for too long, so we did not take advantage of any accommodation. We slept in nearby Elbląg, in the Hotel Młyn Aqua Spa

We discovered a very nice place for coffee in the Water Tower from 1571 in Frombork. At the top there is a viewpoint available for a fee, and in the tower there is a souvenir shop and Cafe Galeria, where I ate a delicious meringue cake with currant. You could also buy Toruń gingerbread here.

Nicolaus Copernicus in Frombork

It was here, on the Cathedral Hill, that Nicolaus Copernicus lived and worked in the Tower named after him. Today, the world-famous astronomer created, among others, the work of his life - "De Revolutionibus", which changed the current concept of the universe. As a canon of the Warmia chapter, he stayed here almost continuously from 1510 until the day of his death, in May 1543. He was 70 years old at the time. Here, too, Nicolaus Copernicus was buried. It rests in the Frombork cathedral. On his deathbed, he managed to see still printed fragments of his groundbreaking work "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres", which reached Warmia in its entirety after his death.

History of Frombork

In 1275, after the burning of the cathedral in Braniewo, it was decided to move the Warmia chapter and build the cathedral in Frombork. At that time, a settlement complex was created, consisting of a cathedral complex on a hill and a city growing on the banks of the Vistula Lagoon. It was not until the 20th century, in 1926, that the Cathedral Hill and the city were merged as one administrative center.
