Cape Formentor is one of the most beautiful and picturesque attractions of Mallorca. It is a must on the tourist map of the island. It lies at the northern end of the peninsula and is the final fragment of the peninsula with a length of 20 km. It offers breathtaking landscapes. Formentor is ideal for lovers of nature, photography, hiking and sunbathing. Here's a step-by-step guide to this unique place.

How to get to Formentor in Mallorca?

Formentor is an extension of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, through which you have to break through when heading to the cape. Coming back in the evening, we used the Ma-13 motorway, which allows us to easily and efficiently return to the capital in about 1 hour.

But going to Formentor, we chose the more difficult route Ma-10. It winds in serpentines among the peaks. But it is incredibly scenic. It's really nice here. The road is asphalt, the surface is level, and the edges are secured. But there are a lot of cyclists on it, and since there is no shoulder, you have to be very careful about them. Panoramas compensate for the effort. Along the way, there are several viewpoints worth stopping at. I list them below.

To reach the very end, or Cap de Formentor, you need to continue your journey in the town of Pollença, not on the Ma-10 road, but on the Ma-2200. It is a winding road full of serpents, offering spectacular views of the sea and mountains. The last section of the road is Ma-2210, from Port de Pollenca. It is closed to cars from June to September, and sometimes even until mid-October. Then you can only get to the end by bus. This road was designed by the Majorcan architect Antonio Parietti Coll in 1925 (the same one who designed the famous snake road on Sa Calobra).

The final section is also asphalted and in good condition, which allows for a comfortable ride. However, it is worth being careful due to the large number of cyclists using this route. We drove it in the second half of October and it was already open to tourists. Views and emotions guaranteed. At the end there is a free car park, we found practically full, but there is a constant exchange of tourists.

Attractions and viewpoints on the Formentor Peninsula

This is a spectacular fragment of Mallorca that is a must-visit. Several attractions and places are especially worth recommending. Here are the most beautiful viewpoints of the Formentor Peninsula!

Cap de Formentor and Far de Formentor - lighthouse

At the end of the peninsula is the Cap de Formentor. The northernmost point of Mallorca. This place offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding cliffs. On the cape there is also the Faro de Formentor lighthouse, built in 1863. It still performs its navigational function. The lighthouse has a height of 22 meters and is located at an altitude of 188 meters above sea level. In high season, the road leading here is closed to cars and only buses transport tourists. It was already open in October, but the crowds were large and the free parking lot under the lantern was full. It is a fairytale corner of the island, spectacular and unreal. It's really worth seeing in Mallorca!

Formentor Beach in Mallorca

One of the main attractions of the peninsula is Formentor Beach (Playa de Formentor). It is located between Port de Pollenca and Cap de Formentor. Free parking is available here. It delights with white, fine sand and turquoise water. The beach is about 1 km long and surrounded by a pine forest. It is ideal for families with children, as the waters here are shallow. It is crowded during the season, so it is worth coming here early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent on the beach. From this beach, you look at the magical Alcudia on the other side of the bay.

Mirador Es Colomer - the most beautiful viewpoint

Mirador Es Colomer is the most beautiful viewpoint on the route. When traveling through the peninsula, it is definitely worth stopping here. This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in all of Majorca. There are wonderful views to all parts of the world. 360-degree panorama. For high cliffs, rocky hills and the sea. A 300-meter path has been organized here, and you can also climb to the top with a watchtower. Many believe, with which we agree, that the horizons here are greater than at the very tip of the cape. There is a free car park and a restaurant.

It's an Instagram photo spot. We stopped at Mirador de Es Colomer twice. First going to the lighthouse, and then coming back from it, to the sunset. The views here are truly stunning, we highly recommend it! It is somewhat reminiscent of Ghajn Tuffieh in Malta.

Cala Figuera on Cape Formentor

Cala Figuera is a place on Cape Formentor for those who prefer more wild beaches. It is a small, rocky cove surrounded by high cliffs. It is a great place to snorkel due to the rich marine life. Don't confuse it with another Cala Figuera in the eastern part of Mallorca.

Other viewpoints on the Ma-10 route

  • Mirador de ses Barques - viewpoint with free parking and a small restaurant (bus stop)
  • Font des Noguer - a walking area above the Embassament de Cúber water reservoir, available all year round. There is a trekking route here and you will see the highest peak of Mallorca - Puig Major with an altitude of over 1400 m above sea level. We met grazing donkeys and sheep here. Free parking is available on the side of the road
  • Mirador de s 'Entreforc - a scenic cove, on the other side of the street there is a free car park on the side of the road next to a small table shop

Car rental in Formentor and Mallorca. Fast24 rental

The road to Formentor is beautiful and at the same time quite difficult, although well prepared. An interesting fact is that it was marked out by a man who used donkeys. Apparently, they always intuitively find the easiest way to overcome a given terrain. We moved by car, Volkswagen Polo, from Fast24 rental - Mallorca/Mallorca rental. We highly recommend it, because it is run by Poles, so it is easy to get along. We have already arranged everything online. We picked up the car from the airport and it accompanied us all the time for five days, we handed it over in the parking lot at the airport before the departure. Also very convenient and coolly solved, without additional fees and problems.

Accommodation in Mallorca

While visiting Mallorca, we slept in El Arenal, adjacent to Palma, the capital of the island. It is an interesting place with a bay, souvenir shops and many restaurants. It's not super quiet here, and our Hostel Atlanta accommodation wasn't very high, but compared to other accommodation on the island, it was really cheap here. We paid PLN 900 for 4 nights for 2 people. On the plus side, there is a communal and equipped kitchen with equipment, and a slightly poor bathroom.

Here you will find a wide selection of accommodations. By booking your stay on Booking.com through our link, you support the development of our blog — and we thank you in advance! It helps us reach many interesting places that we later love to show you and share our experiences and information with you.
