Bobolice Castle - rebuilt stronghold in the Jura

Zamek Bobolice

For over a dozen years, arriving in Bobolice in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, we can enjoy the magnificent, beautifully restored medieval castle. This is a real unique thing in the region, because most of the strongholds remain in ruins. In addition, tourists can visit its interiors, which makes it all the more enjoyable that the Bobolice Castle was truly created from these ruins.

Castle today

Currently, Bobolice Castle standing on a steep hill belongs to the senatorial Lasecki family, which faithfully rebuilt this beautiful stronghold. Both the upper castle and the lower castle with a courtyard, entrance gate and perimeter walls were restored.

Initially, only the entrance to the castle courtyard and to the interiors was paid, now the entrance to the castle membrane is paid additionally. The cash register stood in the spacious parking lot at the foot of the castle. Next to the stronghold there is also a restaurant and a hotel.

Inside the castle, there is an exhibition open to the public. You will see here chambers with an exhibition of armour or furniture. You can admire the beautiful chapel from behind the bars. In addition, you can enter the terrace, castle walls and the courtyard of the castle, where you will learn that the Bobolice Castle was the scenery of the series "Crown of Kings", in which it was theWawel Castle in Kraków, as well as scenes for the music video "Merida Waleczna" - an animated Disney film.

History of Bobolice Castle

The royal castle of Bobolice was built in the middle of the fourteenth century by Casimir the Great, on the site of an earlier wooden building. The Bobolicka stronghold was an element of the entire defence system of the Eagles' Nests, intended to protect the western border of the Polish state from Silesia.

In 1370, the castle fell into the hands of the Duke of Opole - Władysław Opolczyk, who later leased it to Hungarian Andrzej Schoeny of Barlabas. It was not a good time for the local population, because foreign inhabitants of the castle conspired with the Teutonic Knights, robbed and tormented the village.

Władysław Jagiełło came to the rescue of the Poles, who took over the castle and the surrounding estates by force of arms. Over the following centuries, the building changed owners many times, including the Szafrańc family, the Krez family, the Męciński family and the Myszkowski family (the owners of the nearby Mirow castle).

At the end of the 16th century, the castle in Bobolice was seriously damaged during the invasion of Maximilian Habsburg, but still attempts were made to save it. However, a few decades later, the invasion of the Swedes turned the fortress into a total ruin, which was destroyed for the next 300 years.

Bobolice Castle - legend and White Lady

According to legend, the castles in nearby Mirów and Bobolice were ruled by two brothers - Mir and Bobol, but the ending of this story was not happy. During Miro's absence, the younger Bobol seduced his beloved. Enraged and jealous, Mir killed his brother and walled the girl up in the dungeon. To this day, she appears on the walls as the White Lady. Every castle must have its White Lady🙂

Mirowskie Skałki - Grzęda Mirowska

According to legend, the connection between the castles used to lead through underground dungeons. Today, I recommend the picturesque trail leading from one castle to another through the beautiful Mirowskie Rocks, called the Mirowska Ridge. Until recently, the red Eagle's Nest Trail ran here

Later, the perch ceased to be accessible to tourists in its entirety and a net stood between the castles. Today, the entire area belongs to the Lasecki family. You can walk from the castle to the castle along a path about 1.5 km long. However, you have to pay for it. This can be done at the castle in Mirów or the castle in Bobolice.

The fee is not very large, and the views are beautiful. On the route, you can also find the Stable Cave, where the teeth of a Neanderthal, or Jurassic Bobolus, were discovered.
