Binz is an elegant resortin Germany, located on the island of Rügen, on the Baltic Sea, or Ostsee. But we were captivated by this place! Binz is a small but beautiful resort. Very atmospheric, with white intricately decorated buildings and a pleasant sandy beach. It is one of the most beautiful and popular resorts of Rügen, the largest island of Germany and Pomerania. Where is Binz located? Location & Directions

Binz is located in the eastern part of Rügen, on the largest German island, in the north of Germany, in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This Baltic resort is located on the Prorer Wiek bay, between forests, moors and a beach stretching for kilometers. The town is well connected with the rest of the island, and is also a convenient starting point to Prora, Sassnitz, Granitz hunting castle, Göhren or other attractions of Rügen. From the border crossing in Kołbaskowo near Szczecin, take route No. 11, then 20, and then E251 to Straslund over the bridge and further to the exit to road No. 196, which already leads to the Binz area. Binz is also easily reached by train, as it has a train station and good regional and long-distance connections. On Rügen, there is also a narrow-gauge tourist railway "Rasender Roland", the so-called Rushing Roland, which goes from Putbus through Binz, Sellin and Baabe to Göhren.

Binz Beach and Boardwalk

The biggest attraction of Binz is the wide, sandy beach and long promenade, ideal for walks at any time of the year. In season, the place lives with cafes, restaurants and views of the Baltic Sea, and a walk along the coast allows you to feel the atmosphere of a classic German resort. Very characteristic on the promenade are villas in the style of spa architecture, painted in white, which give Binz an elegant, historical appearance.

Kurhaus - Spa House in Binz

Kurhaus is an impressive Spa House on the promenade almost on the beach by the pier. Together with Kurplatz and the pergolas and the stage, it forms a representative architectural ensemble of the town. It is here that residents and tourists gather for concerts, festivals and summer events. Thus, Binz has not only a walking function, but also a social and cultural one.

Seebrücke - Binz Pier

From the promenade, you will enter directly onto the pier in Binz. It is free and offers interesting walks combined with rest and admiring the views, because benches have been prepared here. The pier is 370 meters long and is the second longest in Rügen after the Sellin pier. Interestingly, this is another structure in this place. The first pier in Binz was built in 1902 as a footbridge with a length of as much as 560 meters. In 1905 it was destroyed by a storm, and after reconstruction the pier was named Prince Heinrich Bridge. On 28 July 1912, the balcony collapsed under the weight of tourists while docking the steamer. As many as 50 people were in the water, and 17 died. In the winter of 1942, the weathered pier was destroyed by ice, wind and waves. In 1994, a new pier was put into use, which is still enjoyed by tourists today. At the end of the pier there is a small marina from where you can take a cruise along the Cretaceous coast.

Müther-Turm - Müther Tower in Binz

The Müther Tower is an iconic beach structure in Binz. It is a former rescue tower, which was built in 1981 according to the design of the famous engineer and architect Ulrich Müther. It is distinguished by a futuristic lump resembling a landing UFO. It is an interesting style of modernist architecture of the GDR. Müther-Turm is located at the entrance to beach no. 6, at the intersection of the promenade and Putbuser Straße. Today, it is an interesting place to rest and, although it is small, it is one of the most recognizable photographic objects on the coast. Further towards the cliff, a wild beach begins and naturists can be found here.

What to see in the area?

Nearby, it is also worth seeing Prora, a monumental complex from the Nazi era, today partially transformed into a museum and tourist space. The cliffs in Jasmund National Park near Sassnitz are very beautiful and unique. In the south of Rügen, on the other hand, the white town of Putbus is full of roses. It is also worth visiting the Im-jaich marina.

Where to eat in Binz?

In Binz you will find plenty of restaurants and cafes, on the promenade there is catering in almost every villa. We ate fish and chips in Dolden Mädel Binz. Nice place, relaxed, with tasty cuisine. Other places worth recommending are Strandhalle Binz or Weltenbummler. Tasty donuts like from grandma are served at Kurplatz.

Accommodations in Binz

While visiting Binz, we slept in the lovely Apartment "Haus Möwe" at Schillerstraße 2. It is located in the heart of Binz. We had 2 rooms, a private bathroom, a kitchenette and a terrace overlooking the charming buildings. We recommend this place because it was quiet and very clean. It is a facility supervised by the Tourist Information Point - Besucherzentrum Haus des Gastes.

Brief history

Binz began as a small fishing village, and the first mention of the village dates back to 1318. However, the development of the resort began only in the nineteenth century, when the first bathing facilities were created and began to attract holidaymakers. The breakthrough was the railway. In 1872, a railway connection from Bergen to Binz was opened, which greatly facilitated the access of tourists. In the following years, hotels, villas and spa infrastructure were created, and Binz quickly gained the status of a fashionable resort on the Baltic Sea. After World War II, the town was first in the Soviet occupation zone, and later in the GDR. After the reunification of Germany, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern returned to the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Today, Binz combines history with tourism, preserving the atmosphere of an elegant seaside resort.
