Bielsko-Biała is an interesting city in the Silesian Voivodeship, lying at the foot of the Silesian Beskids, near Czechowice-Dziedzice, Jaworze and Żywiec. The city impresses with its architecture, and after a thorough reconstruction it captivates even more. It is called Little Vienna for a reason. Charming corners are intertwined with modern architectural solutions, which I must admit made a positive impression on me.

Bielsko-Biała Castle

The castle standsin the center of Bielsko-Biała and overlooks the city. It is the oldest and largest historic building of the historic city of Bielsko. The oldest fragments of the castle come from the fourteenth century, and over the next centuries it was gradually expanded. It is an urban-type castle, from the beginning it was included in the fortification system of Bielsko. From the end of the 16th century, the defensive role of the castle decreased and it became a noble residence. Currently, the Museum in Bielsko-Biała is located in the castle.

Bielsko-Biała Fairy Tale Walking Trail

Ratusz w Bielsku

Why such a trail? It is in Bielsko that the Drawing Film Studio has existed since the middle of the 20th century, which is located at 24 Cieszyńska Street. This is where well-known and popular fairy tales from old bedtime stories, including Bolek and Lolek or Reksio, were created. Thus, the idea of creating a trail with monuments of characters from these fairy tales was born.

The first on the trail was Reksio in 2009 (on a small square on the White River, between 11 Listopada Street and Stojałowskiego Street). He is 90 cm tall. Another monument is Bolek and Lolek, created in 2011 at Mostowa Street, near THE Sfera shopping mall. Another fairy-tale monument is created by Pampalini and a hippo from the fairy tale "Pampalini the animal hunter". It has been located on Bohaterów Warszawy Street since 2019. The fourth sculpture is the Wawel Dragon and Bartolini Bartłomiej from the fairy tale "The Abduction of Balthazar the Sponge". The monument was erected in 2020 at 11 Listopada Street. The fifth sculpture of the fairytale trail also stood on 11 Listopada Street, in the vicinity of Bartolini in 2021. This is Don Pedro de Pommidore, a spy from the Land of Rainforest from the fairy tale  "The Abduction of Balthazar the Sponge". Do you remember him shouting Carramb?

St. Nicholas Cathedral in Bielsko-Biała

Near the Market Square, there is a high tower of the cathedral, which ends with characteristic observation loggias. This interesting building has an equally interesting history. The oldest elements of the cathedral date back to 1443-47, when the first brick Gothic church was built here, thanks to the Cieszyn prince Wenceslaus I. Probably in the place of a wooden church surrounded by a cemetery. The temple gained its present fortification only in 1912. Strangely, different styles mix here, from Gothic to Modernism.

Polish Theatre in Bielsko-Biała

Katedra w Bielsku

The Polish Theatre is located in a beautiful, historic building next to the castle. The theatre was founded in 1890 as a dramatic theatre. The building itself was built in the years 1889-90, according to the design of the Viennese architect Emil von Förster. It presents an eclectic style, with a predominance of neoclassicism and neo-Baroque. On the facade you will notice the motif of a Roman triumphal arch decorated with statues of Apollo and the muses of Melpomena and Talia. The theatre resembles the Vienna Opera and the National Theatre in Budapest.

Tenement house Pod Żabami in Bielsko-Biała

You will find many beautiful tenement houses in the city, but the "Pod Żabami" tenement house deserves special attention. It stands in the city of Biała, opposite the church of Martin Luther. It is really beautiful, and it is decorated with funny frog sculptures. This Art Nouveau building was built in 1903, according to the design of Emanuel Rost Jr., as well as many other monuments of this city. Originally, it housed Rudolf Nahowski's winery. Interestingly, on the nearby, renovated square of the Polish Army, reference was made to this topic and frog sculptures are created at the fountain. A frog with a flute and a frog with an umbrella have already stood.

Street art in Bielsko-Biała

The city may not be famous for its murals, but when walking through the streets, we will meet quite a lot of them, because several dozen, and new ones are constantly arriving. They are described in the Murale guidebook created by Galeria Bielska BWA. Since 2008, this gallery has been actively supporting the creation of murals in the city space. During this time, among others: "Windows" by Karolina Zdunek (Adam Mickiewicz Street) and "It's a crowd" by the Twożywo group on the gallery facade (3 Maja 11 Street) and "Great Blue" by Joanna Stańko on the tenement house at 10 Sikorskiego Street. I especially like the Owl (Stefania Sempołowska 1) or the Shepherd (11 Listopada 74).

The photo shows a mural referring to the idea of combining Bielsko and Biała. Its author is Wojciech Kołacz. It was established in 2021, on the 70th anniversary of the merger of cities. It is located on the wall of the building at the Town Hall Square, opposite the Town Hall.

Shelter in Bielsko-Biała

The air raid shelter is one of the souvenirs after World War II. The shelter, or actually the anti-aircraft gap, is located in the park just behind the town hall. No one has been here for many years. When we visited the city with a guide, we had the opportunity to look inside it. The facility is about 50 meters long and could accommodate a maximum of 280 people. It was most likely created in 1941, as indicated by the inscriptions in the shelter.

Map of city attractions

We have prepared a map with city attractions for you. This will certainly make it easier for you to explore it.

History of Bielsko-Biała

The resort was created from the merger of two separate towns: Bielsko and Biała, located on the opposite banks of the Biała River. It was the border of Silesia and Lesser Poland, and the merger took place in 1951. The character and face of Bielsko was determined by the flourishing of dressmaking, initiated here as early as in the 16th century and developing intensively until World War II. Both Bielsko and Biała, although economically connected with the Polish lands, were culturally related to the Czech and Austrian countries. This is evidenced to this day by the unusual architecture and specific climate, similar to the main centers of former Austria-Hungary, especially Vienna.
