Bielska Cave in the Slovakian Bielskie Tatras. Sightseeing and advantages of the Bielańska Cave

The Bielska Cave is considered the most beautiful cave in the entire Tatras and one of the most beautiful in Europe! This is one of those places that prove that the Tatras can delight not only on the surface. Hidden in the massif of the Bielskie Tatras, on the Slovak side of the mountains, it is a unique attraction for everyone who likes to discover the less obvious face of nature. It's a wonderful trip deep into the earth, but also deep into the history and geology of the region – and a great option for a day trip from Poland. For me, a visit to the cave is a dream come true, because I love the underground, especially so delightful.

What is the name of the cave? - Bielska, Bielańska or Beliańska

Naming a cave carries a certain freedom. The official Polish name of this Slovak natural monument is the Bielska Cave (from the Bielskie Tatras, where it is located). The names Bielańska, Belańska or Beliańska Cave are also commonly used, because they are a direct translation of the Slovak name of the village and the cave itself (words Belianska jaskyňa). In practice, you will meet each of these forms, both on the Internet and on tourist markings, so it is worth knowing that they all refer to the same place.

Bielska Cave - location, access and parking

The Bielska Cave is located on the other side of the Tatra Mountains, near the village of Tatranská Kotlina (Tatranská Kotlina), by the main road leading through the Slovak Tatra Mountains number 66. On-site parking is paid and quite expensive (as everywhere in Slovakia in this part of the Tatras). The official cave parking costs 10 euros (2026). We stood opposite, at the Koliba Guesthouse. Also 10 euros for the whole day, but after talking that we only for 2 hours, because it takes more or less that long, we paid 8 euros. You have to walk to the entrance to the cave. A walk uphill on the northern slope of Kobyle Wierch, which allows you to feel the atmosphere of mountain adventure, awaits you for a few minutes. There is a shop and toilets at the entrance.

How to dress? How much does a ticket cost? - practical information about the Belianska Cave

It is worth dressing for the Cave comfortably and according to the conditions. The underground is cold – these are not our Jurassic caves, but actually Tatra conditions. The temperature oscillates around 6 degrees Celsius, so we actually enter winter, even on hot days. It is definitely worth having a sweatshirt or a light jacket with you. Some of the tourists were in short shorts – they lasted, but they were definitely cold. The route is about 1,300 meters long, and there are as many as 860 stairs to climb, so on the one hand you can warm up, but on the other – the tour lasts long enough that the cold can be felt.

The cave is electrically lit, so you don't need a flashlight. The tour takes place with a guide – he guided us in Slovak, but because we found a large Polish group, he also spoke in Polish. The ticket costs 15 euros for adults and 8 euros for children under 15 (2026).

History of the discovery and sharing of the Bielańska Cave in Slovakia

Although the entrance opening of the Bielska Cave was known for a long time, as evidenced by signatures from 1718 and 1731, it was not until the end of the 19th century that people dared to go deeper. The official discovery of the cave took place on 22 July 1881 by mountain guides Július Husz and Johan Britz. The next year, 1882, local patients could descend to the corridors, which shows how quickly this place became a tourist attraction. Interestingly, it is the first cave in the Tatras and the second in Europe to receive electric lighting. This took place in 1896 – as at that time, it was a huge technological achievement.

Visiting the Bielska Cave - attractions and drip dress

The Bielska Cave is visited with a guide at certain times, also in Polish. The whole process takes about 70 minutes. Belianska jaskyňa is considered the most beautiful cave in the whole Tatras, but also the most popular cave in Slovakia. And even one of the greatest in Europe – and it's hard to disagree with that. We were enchanted by it.

The circular hiking trail has a length of 1370 m and an elevation of 125 m. Long corridors lead to the 6 main sightseeing points, and we climb a total of 860 stairs. The tour takes about 70 minutes. The air temperature ranges from  5 to 6.3 °C. The deeper we go down in its abyss, the more delightful it is. The largest rooms are several dozen meters high and wide, and numerous drip forms create an unusual gallery of nature that we will not see on the surface. These calcite infiltrations determine the beauty of the cave, and here Mother Nature did not tame them. Infiltrative waterfalls and pagoda stalagmites, lakes and other interesting forms of cave ornaments delight at almost every step.

One of the most spectacular places in these undergrounds is the Music Hall with unusual acoustics. This fact is eagerly used – during each tour, music is played here so that you can see the unique sound of this place. There are also live concerts. It reminded us of the beautiful Drach cavein Mallorca, where every time you visit, concerts are held on an underground lake. Something really magical. Here, for a start, they played us the "Time Machine" of the Jam band, because there were a lot of Poles, and then they changed it to a classic piece – the Baroque Kanon in D major by Johann Pachelbel.

It's a really unusual experience. I highly recommend this place – both as an interesting attraction during your stay in the Tatras and as a destination in itself.
