Bardo is an interesting, small town in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, located above the picturesque Nysa Kłodzka, creating a breakthrough between Kłodzko and Ząbkowice Śląskie. At the moment, this fact is being used dynamically to develop tourism in this beautiful corner. Bardo in a small area offers historic temples, atmospheric streets, one of the most characteristic bridges in the region, mountain trails, viewpoints, unusual chapels, rock cliffs and, of course, the picturesque Nysa Kłodzka Gorge.

Bardo – location, access and parking

Bardo is located in the southern part of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, on the site of the famous Bardzki Gorge. The village is located at the foot of the Bardzkie Mountains and is often considered a historical gateway to the Kłodzko Land and a great base for exploring the region. Thanks to its location along an important transport route, the Bardo is relatively easily accessible by car. The village can also be reached by train, which is an interesting option for people planning a day trip without a car.

However, if you have chosen a car, it is best to leave it near the center and continue exploring the Bardo on foot. The highlights are close to each other. A good starting point is Freedom Square, near which there is a basilica, a tourist information point and some of the most important attractions. However, it is worth remembering that the availability of parking spaces may change depending on the season, weekend or events taking place in the city.

Things to do in Barda What to see? Map of experiences

You will be surprised by the number of attractions offered by this small town. Nice and valuable monuments, largely sacred, green surroundings and a winding river give many opportunities when exploring the city and allow for active rest from everyday life.  It is a place where pilgrimage tourism meets active recreation. One day you can visit the Baroque basilica and historic chapels, and a few hours later you can hike to Obryw Skalny, ride a mountain bike or float down the Nysa Kłodzka breakthrough. Bardo is therefore a great idea both for a short trip and for the whole weekend. People looking for places less crowded than the most popular resorts of the Kłodzko Valley will find themselves here particularly well. There is also literally the smell of gingerbread in the city, which transports you to the world of fairy tales. You will definitely like Bardo, I am sure of it. Check out our guide and discover the Bard's top attractions!

Stone Bridge in Barda – a symbol of the city

In the center of Bard, on the Nysa Kłodzka river, a beautiful stone bridge was moved. It is a facility that strongly attracts the attention of tourists. The first bridge built here was wooden and was built in the Middle Ages. It stood for several centuries. Bardo was located on an important communication route leading from Poland to the Czech Republic. Merchants, pilgrims, travelers, and even kings rode through it. The construction of the stone bridge was completed in 1589. In later years it was rebuilt, and during World War II it was blown up. It was rebuilt in 1950, preserving its historical character. Interestingly, in 1997, the bridge was resisted by a great flood in Lower Silesia. The culminating wave then reached about 11 meters, and the water of the Nysa Kłodzka overflowed the bridge. It is worth going to the other side of the river and looking at the Bardo from a slightly different perspective. Recently, sculptures were erected on the bridge, which were reconstructed according to historical ones.

Bardo – City of Wonders and Famous Sanctuary

Bardo is called the City of Wonders. It is a famous pilgrimage site where you can get to know at least some extremely interesting sacral objects. In the center of the village stands the Shrine of Our Lady of the Guardian of the Faith, a baroque church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was built in the 17th century on the site of former churches. The current basilica was built on the initiative of the Cistercians in the years 1686-1704 and is still one of the most important symbols of the Bard.

In the temple, in the main altar, there is a valuable Statue of Our Lady of Barda, famous for graces and surrounded by worship for many centuries. It is a small, wooden Romanesque sculpture of the Madonna and Child. It is said to be Our Lady of Smiles and that it is the oldest wooden figurine in Poland. It is certainly one of the most valuable sacral monuments of the Bard. A visit to the basilica is a must for visiting the city – even if we don't come here for religious reasons. The interior of the temple impresses with its baroque decor, decorations and monumental organs.

Museum of Sacred Art

Right next to the basilica is the Museum of Sacred Art, where you can learn more about the religious and artistic history of the city. Among other things, antique sculptures, paintings, liturgical objects and other works related to Marian worship were collected here. This is a good stop for people who want not only to see the basilica, but also to learn more about the history of this place.

Moving Nativity scene in Barda - a famous family attraction

One of the Bard's most unusual attractions is the moving nativity scene. It was created in the undergrounds once associated with the Cistercian crypt and was made in the second half of the 20th century. The mechanisms set in motion numerous figurines, and the whole creates an extremely characteristic, somewhat fairy-tale attraction. Children will especially like the nativity scene, but it is also difficult for adults to pass it indifferently.

Rosary Hill in Barda

Ruchoma Szopka w Bardzie

The Way of the Rosary is a nice trail on the Hill of the Rosary in Barda. It leads around the allotment gardens from the chapel to the chapel, which present the individual mysteries of the rosary. The key to all the chapels can be downloaded in the Minor Basilica, in the souvenir shop. Although the brick chapels were built at the same time, each looks completely different and refers to a different architectural style. A walk to the Rosary Hill is much easier than a trip to Calvary. The entire route takes about 1 hour. This is a fairly gentle approach, making it suitable for families with children or the elderly.

Mount Calvary (Bardzka Mountain) and the Way of the Cross

One of the most interesting walks in Barda is the ascent to the Calvary Mountain, i.e. the Bardzka Mountain with an altitude of 593 m above sea level. There is a trail with historical stations of the Way of the Cross. Along the way, you can also see the Source of Mary. The hike ultimately leads towards the Mountain Chapel associated with the cult of the Weeping Mother of God. This place has a double character – it is an important pilgrimage destination, but at the same time it is simply a pleasant, though not so easy, mountain walking route. It also offers viewpoints.

Obryw Skalny – one of the Bard's most interesting attractions

Obryw Skalny is a place worth visiting during a trip to the city. Located high up on the slope of Calvary, it is a huge landslide. It was built in 1598 after heavy rains. Today, it is one of the most characteristic elements of the Bard landscape and at the same time a great vantage point. From the vantage point located here, you can admire the Bardo, Nysa Kłodzka and the surrounding Bardzkie Mountains. A hike to Obryw Skalny can be part of a longer route through Calvary. It is worth putting on comfortable shoes, because some parts of the approach are steeper. Interestingly, Obryw Skalny is not only a landscape attraction, but also a place of great geological and natural importance. This area is currently protected as a natural and landscape complex.

The Count's Place – a lesser-known vantage point

Bardo

The Count's Place is a less obvious vantage point. It became popular in the 19th century, and is located on a rock ledge above Nysa Kłodzka, from which there is a nice view of the Bardo and the river gorge. It's not as popular as the Rock Cover, so it's more intimate.

Bardzkie gingerbread

Visiting the Bard does not have to be limited to monuments and mountain trails. A famous local curiosity is the Bardzkie gingerbread. It is worth trying them while in the city. What a tasty and fragrant adventure. Thanks to the gingerbread and Madam Madzia, who has a heart for her hands, you will move into the world of a gingerbread fairy tale. It started in the former Robert Gerlich Gingerbread Factory, where a beautiful café invites you today. You will taste gingerbread baked according to old recipes, various ones, those more and less sweet, with marmalade, butter, marzipan and other additives. In addition, a shop and a tiny cafe were created by the basilica. Bardo is already famous for its gingerbread, and we had to taste it. I also strongly recommend you to stop here for coffee and something sweet. Local treats are also an interesting souvenir from your trip.

Bardo Camp – bicycles, accommodation and active leisure

Bardo Camp is a proposition for those who want to be closer to nature during their trip, but also like to indulge in sports. Here there are great conditions for active recreation, and the campsite allows you to combine exploring the region with accommodation in a more relaxed, tourist atmosphere. It is a good place for people traveling by motorhome, who like to sleep under a tent or simply looking for accommodation with a slightly different atmosphere than a classic hotel. But it is also a bike rental, traditional and electric, where you can go to the surrounding singletracks or to the exercise park, which was created on the spot. In addition, you will be delighted by the views and enjoy homemade dinners.

Rafting on the Bardzki Gorge inflatable boat

If you like to spend time actively, you can go rafting on the Bardzki Gorge inflatable boat in the Nysa Kłodzka. This attracts large crowds of tourists. We also really liked it. The breakthrough of the river is best known from the water level. Nysa Kłodzka crosses the Bardzkie Mountains here, creating a picturesque landscape full of bends, wooded slopes and rock fragments. Rafting is organized in different variants. Thanks to this, you can have a peaceful family adventure as well as a more active day. We took advantage of the offer of the Ławica Palace.

Hiking trails in Barda

Bardo is a wonderful and picturesque place where you can wander not only through the streets of the city, but also through the beautiful surroundings. Interesting trails have been prepared for tourists – mountain and thematic, such as the Cistercian, Napoleonic or amber trail. Particularly interesting are the city's hiking trails, which allow you to combine sightseeing with activity. One of the routes leads through the basilica, the Museum of Sacred Art, a movable crib, old tenement houses, a stone bridge, chapels, relics of a medieval castle, the Source of Mary, the Beautiful View, the Rock Obryw and the Mountain Chapel. The second of the interesting proposals leads to the Rosary Hill. It is shorter and easier, so it is well suited for a family walk. Bardo is easy to miss on your way to more popular attractions, but don't make the mistake. It's a charming place, perfect for a day or even a weekend trip.
